PS3 V3.15 System Software Update
PS3 V3.15 System Software Update –
12-10-2009,09:36 AM
Shortly, there will be yet another update to the Sony Firmware for the PS3.
This one is neat in that is finally allows you to transfer stuff, like your game saves, downloaded content, etc. between your PS3, as long as you have a network cable, and both PS3's are working and running the latest firmware.
Maybe M$ will now allow better transfers, but I don't think so.
Still wish there was a way to recover lost stuff from a DEAD PS3, which is non-longer fixable, I have so many customers that want to have their PS3 fixed just to get their data, but at least now with this new "DATA TRANSFER UTILITY" in the PS3 v3.15 update, maybe now I can do a quick temp. fix on a DEAD PS3 and it will run long enough to transfer the data before it dies again.
Anyhow, here is the link to the Sony Blog regarding the update:

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) will receive its next system software update shortly – v. 3.15. This is an optional update, and it enables existing PS3 owners who purchase a new PS3 system (perhaps as a second unit for the household) to transfer their content from their current PS3 to the new system. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3 system. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

So I take it you still can't just move the HDD from the dead PS3, to the new one and have it re-authorize the content if you use the same PSN?

Nope, still no option for that, since each hdd is married to the motherboard.
But like the other poster says, it is finally handy for those with dead lasers.
At least it is step in the right direction.

there is no money for sony in there, because obviously you can put the ps2 disk directly into ps3, so everybody will assume you should be able to play your ps2 games you've had for years on your ps3.
now, if ps3 had no way to play ps2 discs, sony would definitely consider ps2 emulation, because you would have to download your games off psn, and pay for them again.
sorry for my angry tone, but that is how i see it.
the truth is - sony has stripped down ps3 with each new model and removed a lot of components that would help with ps2 emulation. rewriting ps2 compatibility for those models would be a new big investment.
one reason is as i described above - everybody will expect to be able to use their ps2 discs with ps3.
second reason - sony makes most profits off psn and game sales. people buying their ps3s to run linux or ps2 games on it don't help with this. that's why those features got canned recently. not only they made ps3 more expensive to manufacture, but they also didn't help sell more games.
psp-emu - well, you cannot run umd's on ps3. and psp is pretty much a hacked platform already. i think sony is planning to make people buy more psp games this way, and a full psp game support for ps3 is definitely on the way.
