For the time being, this update is 100% optional. You will still have access to all previous features. You do not have to update.

Earlier tonight we released an optional system software update (v3.65) for PlayStation 3. This new firmware improves the operating stability of some PS3 format software, and changes the XMB item SaveData Utility (minis) to [SaveData Utility(minis/PSP)].

Again, this update is optional, and can be downloaded by selecting System Update from the Setting column of the XMB.

Find out what features are included in PS3 system software update 3.65.

Main features in system software update version 3.65

    - Saved Data Utility for PSP™ games

[Saved Data Utility (minis)] under [Game] has been changed to [Saved Data Utility (minis/PSP™)].

You can now back up saved data for PSP™ games by copying it to the PlayStation®3 Hard Disk Drive.

Other new or revised features in version 3.65

System stability during use of some PS3 software has been improved.

You really should have put on the front page for this that you do NOT need to install this update to play online.

If you are still on 3.61 all features offline and online still work, it really is optional (at least for now), unlike 3.21 was.

No, just thinking that this is supposed to be an OPTIONAL update. And was wondering if anyone had tested that theory out.

The rest was aimed at the person claiming this old news? I think it only happened yesterday. They are probably just mad about the psx-scene takeover

Not aimed at you in anyway

I'll likely throw this on my 3.61OFW PS3.

It's a USA launch model, so I've been a bit concerned about YLOD thanks to the 3.61FW update. It's prolly gonna die one day anyways, I'd just like it to be later rather than sooner... like after I've learnt to reball X-Box 360's so I can justify spending £600 on an IR station to reball PS3's.
    60GB (120GB WD Scorpio Drive) PS3 (CECHA01, NTSC), 3.7OFW
    60GB (640GB Samsung Drive) PS3 (CECHC04, PAL), Kmeaw 3.55, Repaired (Dead Laser)
    PSP-1003 FAT, CFW5.00 M33-6 & Prometheus v2
    X-Box 360 Xenon (JTAG'ed, 500GB HDD)
