    Sony Computer Entertainment
America (SCEA), Inc. today announced a new 80GB model of its
PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system. Beginning in
August, the new PS3 model will be available in North America for a
suggested retail price of $599/$659 CND and will be sold with the popular
online-enabled racing game MotorStorm(TM). In conjunction with this news,
the company also announced that effective immediately, the current 60GB PS3
model will be available in North America for $499/$549 CND, or $100 below
    the original launch price.

Been reading on this for a while, waiting from an email at my job announcing the new price. (Work at a Gamestop) Definitely good news and makes me want to pick one up sooner than I thought. But gonna wait until after E3, don't really have plans of picking up a 80gb though unless at E3 they announce a feature it has that is superior to 60gb model. I'm sure much of the community feels the same way. when it came to Elites (don't own a 360) I always recommended them over premium because of added features if it was a first time owner. In right mind I can't say the same for 80gb unless it has something to top previous model. It's obvious why they bundled with Motorstorm one of their top games that demonstrate the PS3's potential plus it has a friendlier rating than other PS3 exclusives. But thats not gonna be enough for the average consumer cause they can use that extra $100 to buy a game they actually want and if they want extra space just buy a new harddrive. Anyways good move for Sony for price drop hope the new SKU works out for them. And hopefully at E3 they'll have some news that blows everything else out of the water.

Here's to hoping. Nobody I know has any interest in picking up a PS3 so far. The highest sticker price hurt it; the lack of good games is killing it. And I have to agree that I would have no interest in spending an extra $100 just for an extra 20gigs of hdd space.
    God made me do it

I'd suggest picking them up quick if you want one. My guess is that, once the 80gb model is introduced, the $499 packages will disappear from store shelves. This is likely more of a liquidation of old stock than a price cut.

While you are probably correct you're more of a cynic than I am.

Yea you're probably right and my intentions are definitely to pick one up asap, probably this weekend. If their true intentions are to clear inventory of te 60gb models and then phase them out as with the 20gb leaving only the 80gb models at the higher 599 price tag. It'd not only be a bold move by Sony but a very foolish one. While they have been able to sell consoles at that price point, making the once higher end model cheaper will drive sales. Leaving just one sku at the higher price just puts them back where they were before. And if they drop the 80gb to 499 after they clear the 60gb stock then what, are they gonna introduce a new sku at 599 again. It's all just gonna cause a lot of confusion as to what exactly Sony's strategy is specially when they should be focusing on software.

In all honesty, I cannot help but to feel that this is not a price drop. For the North American launch there was a $600 and $500 machine available. Although the 20gb model was lacking several features, the console was not crippled.

Now there are a $600 and $500 model available. I just hope that Sony will continually to improve the software emulation and add true 720/1080p support (not upscaling).

At least this time, the $500 model is readily available instead of being difficult to find. The real price drop is when there is a $400 model available.

Well that'd be interesting if they did, good to drive a little more sales during the holiday's but a bad move in the public eye as it would show to those who are quick to judge that Sony doesn't have faith in their big black box.

Well not really a price cut for the EU but more of an enhanced bundle.
I would have preferred a lower price and barebones system.
