Recently a neat picture has appeared thanks to <B>"The M.A.R.T."</B> from the <I>XboxHacker.org</I> site:

The picture seems to show a type of "Blu-Ray Laser Replacement" that has been cut into the original PS3 drive, with a cable running to an external USB hard drive, and the TV showing FFXIII on the load screen.

Attached is the full high-res version of the above picture, since no further infomation is available at the moment, you will have to make up your own minds if will be possible real device to be see in our near future, but you never know as the <B>WODE</B> has been very successful device on the Nintendo Wii system, as a great way to run all your Wii & Gamecube backups.

But it might be truely the only successful way on the PS3.

You don't have to worry about Sony blocking it with firmware updates.

It would work by having a device reproduce the digital data output from
the ps3 blu-ray laser, but instead of grabbing the data via a laser, you grabbing the data from a full digital backup stored on usb hard drive.

This works very well on the Wii with the WODE being the best version out there, and I know the designer of the WODE has been working a 360 version, so I see no reason why the same design ideas can't be applied to the PS3.

As soon as I get more info, I will of course update this posting.

There is more info. The image originates from StreetskaterFU's blog and was posted on June the 17th. At first there was no info, but then he released some info as follows.

The project started as one to let PS3 work without the BDD. That's easy by ripping the drive hardware but the firmware board. This was just a fun project.

While I sniffed all ports used by the BDD I started thinking about an emulation of the drive. At the moment iQD, me and a few more friends collect the correct hardware which is needed to realize a decent analyze of the Blu-Ray drive. We'll keep you updated ;-)

Sony should allow installing games on internal HDD instead of playing it from BD.
I don't want to see FFIX played from BD.
