The PS1 and PS2 where also heavily pirated, and easily the most successful consoles ever, for Sony and for software vendors.
The original Xbox made piracy easy with a hard drive - and yet carried more "Games per console owned" than any before it.
Piracy as a scapegoat is just lame and idiotic these days. Smart companies like Microsoft deal with it in a straight forward fashion and remain profitable and successful.
