PS3 Firmware v3.41 adds more DRM to stop playback of 'pirated' movies!

Reports are the latest PS3 firmware, adds a check to stop "pirated" movies from playback, using a special check on the "audio" track of your DVD-video or Blu-Ray recordable.

This check called "cinavia" has been around since v3.10 firmware, but it seems it is more enabled in the latest firmware, maybe even checking content on your HDD, maybe one of the reasons for so many "bricked" PS3 at 99% looping or crashing with an weird 800x error code.

It is basically an audio watermark that is locked to specific hardware, in theory it would not work on a retail disc anyway as they are made to be played on multiple types of hardware. On a digital download it could work however.

oh i'm sure they will start popping up like crazy in next few weeks. blu ray publishers just can't wait to put this into motion.

Even if they start putting this on BD and DVD it won't make a difference since people will figure out how to remove the audio watermark and that will be gone. Since it can be detected in the audio stream anyone can find it and then remove it and then it will be in the next versions of Anydvd and Dvd Fab Decrypter.

Honestly the only people hurt by this DRM is the pirates who want to watch movies recorded from movie theaters on their PS3.

Here in Brazil a portion of the population is living from selling pirated DVDs and Blurays. That's outrageous.

I honestly hope they stuck DRM similar to this on every single device out there and block these bloodsuckers.


Now to explain why I am saying that:

While I understand that the movie industry is already rich enough, I don't find right that people who could be working on creative things is just taking the easiest route which is copy other people's work.

If it is legitimately stopping pirated movies, then good.

I doubt that the bricking is caused by this though. I haven't seen any yet personally, but I did have some issues updating a fresh HDD to 3.41. Kept saying no update content found, so I did a hard reset and it took it fine.

This is dumb Sony doesn't make any more money on the PS3 by blocking pirated movies (lets be honest before netflix and all the other "legal" alternatives to get a movie online we all pirated movies that's why blockbuster and other rental stores are going out of business because the online legal alternatives are preferred) I like PS3 more than xbox 360 but Sony got so butt hurt from the supposed hacking of the PS3 that they have started pissing on their customers. I haven't updated my PS3 (its been unplugged for weeks) and I am not going to update it ever again unless its hacked I don't play it anymore anyways.

There are already a few retail BDs that have this Cinavia on them, and more will follow.

When they are played from anything but encrypted original media in a BD player or other AACS device that supports Cinavia, the audio will be muted after about 20-30 minutes.

It's an audio watermark that resists everything but pitch shifting so far.

There is a second type of CinaVia flag that is placed int professional recordings. This one causes playback to stop within 1 minute. This is used to stop people trying to bootleg a movie out of the theater. This type of Cinavia flag nearly nobody honest objects to.

If your original BD contains Cinavia in the audio, you will not be able to play even a legal back up of it without the audio cutting out. "The Losers" is a known movie that has it.

It can be placed in ANY audio format, not just what's stored onto a BD, and the PS3 must obey it wherever it is found. People have been working around this by grabbing the audio from the DVD version, but before long the dvd versions will ALSO have it in the audio to stop that little stunt.

i by 100% support the "right" to make a legal copy from a retail copy for back-up purposes. i'm not supporting piracy here at all but trust me there will be times when you really need a back-up!

:lol: 2 days ago my mom had sneak peak passes for the comedy "the other guys" (funny as hell) and like it was either our local law enforcement or ICE who showed up. they were wearing formal black suits with their lame ass badges hanging out of their coat pockets. everybody who was waiting in line had to turn off their electronic devices (yes phones and ect) and then hand them over which ended up in paper bags with serial numbers for tagging. i don't know how anyone can bootleg a movie man cause these guys don't play around.
