    one missing component from PS2 is the CD/DVD DSP. This could be a real problem for PS1/PS2 disc authentication since that could mean that some other hardware is now handling the duties the DSP used to perform. Since the DSP is the first IC to really decode the protection data encoded in the disc it's quite likely that there will be some additional verification prior to communicating with the mechacon(the point where modchips kick in).

    Also, I see no BIOS IC like the old PS2. There's an obvious TSOP IC on the board that could be flash but this is likely the PS3/PS2 BIOSes combined. Like the PSP, the BIOS is probably encrypted.
    i see 2 tsops running in parralell to each other maybe ? makes me think just by looking they are running the ps2 and/ps1 side of things as an entire seprate entity to the ps3 dynamics, dont ask me why but i think this machine is going to take a quick tumble i can feel it in my bones lol

    i wonder if we find the scex signal again we can do an old action replay swap to get some custom code homebrew running ps2 side and possibly even a way into the ps3 side of things back to basics i guess depends if both are intergrated in some way or one is fully locked out while the other is active maybe all we need is a chip to bypass the lock and then a simple loader would surfice.

    let the fun begin

    just have to wait until march now unless i get one from over the pond for a silly price gah.

    got to wait until march before anything hits this side of the shore backwards compatibilty the way $ony have imagined it could be the downfall of the ps3 quickly if they have not been careful.

    Um, this is assuming that you NEED to do all of this to run homebrew. The real programmers haven't take advantage of the systems linux capabilities yet, nor the ability to install another OS to it.

    Dragon is the codename for the EE+GS combination. Nothing I've ever read has lead me to believe anything but that.

    Sources referring to Dragon as EE+GS combo:
    "Beside Sony also annouced about the production of Dragon processor, the combination of the processor - EE(Emotion Engine) and GS(GraphicSynthesizer)."

    If Sony was smart, they'd create a database of MD5(or similar) sums of each ELF for each official game. Then they could simply checksum each game as it's booted to determine if it's an official game or 3rd party software like AR/GS/CB/XP which use the disc key information from games. They could easily implement that for PS1/PS2 discs. That's purely speculation of course.

    I wish I had your optimism for PS3 being cracked quickly but I think we're in for a long wait before there's a mod(at least for PS3 software). CELL is going to make it very difficult for hackers due to the fact that it supports memory protection which block things like buffer/stack exploits(if PS2 EE had this, the PS1 Independence Exploit wouldn't have been possible).

    Xbox 360 has the same memory protections but luckily for the 360 pirates MS ****ed up and used a standard DVD drive with custom firmware to handle the actual disc checking. Sony has the benefit that they designed the drive that the PS3 comes with and BD-ROM firmware hacking is virtually non-existant.

    They aren't going to do any protection scheme for offline games that will require an internet connection to update the info.

    check the engadget coverage here. also some info on the Wii and 360.

    there's a great 4 part video of the disassembly of the PS3 on there. That's what, a 6inch blower on that?
