So, this works for game updates too?
just a thought...(maybe a dumb one)
would it be possible to install the backup manager using the same method (instead of a game demo) and then be able to run it on an unbroken system? that way you could install it on 3.41, update to 3.42 and then get full online functionality as well as retaining the backup manager.
I don't think you understand how the backup manager can start games from HDD or USB, or even how it can run at all, on a console where execution of 'unsigned' code is normally forbidden. (Here 'unsigned' essentially means anything not 'blessed' by Sony secret codes.)
The only reason it can launch games the way it does is because of some device driver 'hooks' installed by the payload code delivered into the PS3 by the jailbreaking process. And another part of the same payload is a change to a system call that normally would prevent unsigned code from being launched at all.
Lack of that syscall fix will make it impossible to run the backup manager in un-jailbroken state, and lack of the 'hooks' would make the launching of games fail in any case.
And making the update to FW 3.42 would put an end to your ability to reach the jailbroken state again, and thus make it impossible to go any further at all. (Unless someone hacks 3.42.)
The limitations I mentioned above are impossible to get around as yet, and the only hint of a possibility to change that is the new method of experimenting with externally loaded firmware, with patches of our own. (the USB_FIRM_LOADER PKG found in another thread)

i can get this to work i cick on the install demo on the xmb and it gives me a error. both in JB abd out of JB
I had the same result too.
Either something basic is missing here, or else the jailbroken states are not quite the same for all jailbreaking methods.
That is a very real possibility, as several jailbreaking programs were made to exclude that part of the payload which handles the 'hooks' for running backups from HDD/USB. So there are at least two main branches of the jailbreak methods, with or without that capability. Possibly there is some other capability in which they can also differ (like that syscall peek/poke stuff), which could make this fail for us, though it works for the one who made this demo manager.
If so, then I think we need to start comparing exactly which jailbreak methods we use, for success VS failure.
The one I use, failing to run the demo both in and out of jailbreak mode, is the one based on the TI-84+ calculator, and using the PS3JB application downloaded as "ps3jb.0.02.0001 edit.rar", which is the one with capacity for using game backups.
