PS2 to $129.99?

IGN reports today's extended third-quarter financial results from Electronic Arts and revealed plenty of juicy information regarding the company's past, present, and future, even hinted at a PlayStation 2 and Xbox price drop. Here are some highlights...

The new Nintendo DS was briefly discussed and it was confirmed that the platform that EA is in the midst of assessing the status of the new system. Sony's PSP, however, was talked about much more directly. As EA anticipates a late November/early December release and predicts a $199-$249 price point. Software should carry an MSRP of $39.99 and EA will supply at least eight to 12 of these titles before the end of the fiscal year. Budgets for the games are between $1-2 million and will be based on existing Electronic Arts franchises with PSP-specific feature sets.

The last big tidbit worth mentioning, is that EA anticipates a price drop for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox systems before Labor Day. Estimates place the price drop to somewhere around $129.99

as i said in the other thread, ea does not make or resell consoles.

this could be something i would consider saying "take it with a grain of salt", but since it isnt even out of a relevant company, i'd have to say "take it with a whole cow lick" instead.

We have heard the price drops for thousand times (last time at about thanksgiving, if I remember correctly), and all we can see is that Sony adds some games to the pack and still sells the PS2 at the same price. T3 pack, eyetoy pack, and so on. When they can sell them at higher price, I don't expect them to lower it...

Eventhougt the latest news about Sony's last year sales was not the best, maybe they will be forced to do something to keep PS2 sales going well... who knows. By the way, after the V9 dead syndrome, there a lot of 30003 PAL consoles popped up as new ones, I haven't opened any yet, but they are not the old V3 consoles for sure... so what those can be ??? (sure there is no LA in them as disk recognisation is not so fast as with V9 and they all are made in Japan, compared to the V9 which was made in China...)

I read a article today in the Chicago Sun-Times saying XBOX is in the red they can't make any money on the console in its current form. It cost to much to manufacture so are thinking of a new design. The Key will be cost with the new console. They want to set it as low as can be. Using cheeper componants and lower manufacturing costs.

LOD: ok, but what will happen to quality then ? When talking about dead V9s', well many of the people are sure that the units die bacause of LOW quality components... How the hell could that be solved then with even less quality components at even lower price ?! I don't know. Anyway Sony's profit last year was lower than in 2002, also the PS2 sale was not the best, a lot of guys have heard about the dead units and they went and bought a SeXbox and not a PS2. Cost is always a factor, but Sony (also MS) has to realise lower prices with lower quality won't make a bigger profit, as many people will stay away from buying their products.

I own a ps2v9 ntsc u/c and had good results with it. For 129.00 who need repairs just buy a new one.

well, you can still replace a bad laser for half of that, and ba chips and fuses for less.

I wished Sony made better quality ps2s. When I was at circuit city there were still v7 Online bundles with ATV Offroad Fury 2. I did see some 50001 consoles though. I would love to have a v9/v10 especially the Midnight Blue Japanese console. At least I still have a ps2.
