This I found very good if it pans out. Makes it a largely better choice over the 360 or even the Wii if the PS3 comes down to $299 (USD)
Here's a bit more on it:

I always liked Pachter, even though he doesn't always get it right, but when he does, he does it big time... and Sony should think fast and cut the price already... if not, we will see the Xbox 360 as the hi-def winner this generation... not only because is cheap, but because of piracy.
I would prefer a Ps3 over a 360, but more like the fact of, if I'm paying 60 bucks for 1 game, I'm not paying for it again. If I can't backup my ps3 games, I'm not going to bother with it.
But it is good to see they are starting to drop in price a little. But they should have seriously thought about this about... a month ago for the whole christmas thing. They really got killed at christmas thanks to (mostly) xbox and wii... With our economy the way it is at the moment, people don't have that kind of money to shell out when all they really have to spend is 199 for a 360 arcade or *gasp* 169 for a preowned at eb/gamestop/babbages. If you don't sell systems, you don't sell games. You don't sell games (razor blades) in a razor style business, then you fail.
and the worest is there is no good games for PS3 not like xbox360 i have always hated xbox but ps3 changed my mind lately so what is the useful for cutting the price ??? like Hitler said its only good for watching Blur-Ray Movies ..I would prefer a Ps3 over a 360, but more like the fact of, if I'm paying 60 bucks for 1 game, I'm not paying for it again. If I can't backup my ps3 games, I'm not going to bother with it.![]()
It's got some good games, and it's kinda cool you can run linux on em, but when it comes to bluray I could care less. But I do wanna play that new metal gear bad... But paying that much just to play metal gear, I can wait till ps4 comes out when the ps3 price point drops off the face of the planet like xbox 1 and ps2 did (picked up 2 xbox 1's for 100 bucks and a ps2 for 50 at gamestop).
Im not a fan boy for Nintendo nor Microsoft..
However I will say this..
Sony always does things like this at the last min...
They always lower the prices on systems as well as other hardware once a threat is found/or is made..
I would love to get a PS3..
However I just don't see the point as every time they do they end up taken something away from the PS3 hardware..
Now if they would include a price of $299 with at least a 60GB HDD as well as backward compatible then yes..
I will in deed by one..
The likely hood of this to happen will be far down the line if at all..
Just my $0.02
Ya Im Bi-Poler and proud of it
On the backwards compatibility you are very right... that is a MUST HAVE for PS3.
If I´m well informed, the PS3 is available for 299€ in Luxembourg now.
Cheap "Import" from EU, to EU and even a Neighbor-Country.
I have every system thats out at the moment and i enjoy my PS3 better than all the other system. My Wii is collecting dust and my Xbox360 has had the RROD for the second time and im not bothered to get it fixed again.
Just change your HDD from stock to a 500GB like i did for only $119AU.Just waiting on the Play TV bundle here in AU.
I'm not fussed about backward compat with the PS3 as i have a PS2 and the PS3 will play PS1 anyways.
Just wish i could have paid a bit less than $400AU
sony pretty much makes more reliable hardware than microsoft - as far as consoles go. well, history of quality of sony's ps2 laser units is another thing ;-), but quality of xbox consoles also left a lot to be desired.
that might explain higher price on sony's side.
remember that ps2 got cheaper by minimizing and integrating (or throwing away) various things to cut down on manufacturing costs (integrated GS/EE, discarding pcmcia, firewire, expansion port). also, the technology moved forward, making manufacturing of various hardware cheaper - sony is probably already getting minimal profit on making ps3 consoles, and that's why they refuse to drop the price.
if only they would sell ps3 without the hdd :]
