The question is will Linux return as in OtherOS in the XMB, or as in an open source seperate newly written Linux launcher.
either way i'm going to be happy if i can experience linux on the ps3.
This has to be the most pointless article written.
I see no point?
Is the author saying basically that, 'take that sony - otherOS will NOT be removed! Your system was hacked due to removal of OtherOS!' and the jailbreak device was released solely to reinstate removed features?
This console was hacked due to the work Geohot did with the ram glitch I believe, and someone's thought of big cash.
Anyway - we lost otherOS due to hacking.. we didn't lose OtherOS and then hack to get it back. If thats the case, the system security would have been very weak - only 4-6 months to hack?
I do have a feeling that the PS3 will have a LOT of features
PSP/PSX/PS2 game play
Dreamcast game play
normal PSX/64/snes/genesis rom play
PS3 to PSP gameplay with the SFO editing
full media playback (bluray, mkv, xvid, etc)
Linux distro
I can see a huge pkg file coming out that will be a desktop distro of sorts though, 99% of the work is done - drivers are already there for 'phats'
what would be optional is a custom firmware though - to roll with punches of online like PSP, and add features directly to XMB, and to remove need for dongle.
..Heres your homebrew geohot!
Let us remember, that:
1) Without Linux, PS memory wouldn't be dumped by geohot.
2) Without step 1, we wouldn't have ps3jailbreak
3) Despite all the progress, PS3 is far from being fully hacked
Now imagine how hard it would be to hack PS4, if would be achieved at all. I think one day we'll wake up and regard "everything is hackable" concept as an old urban legend.
one way sony could get many people interested in the hacking/homebrew scene to update to their firmware that has blocked the jailbreak exploit would be to give back other os in a new update (if it were possible).
again, Sony prefers to take things away than to give them back, so it's pretty unlikely!
Linux 1 / Sony 0
Looking at the near future![]()
We are coming closer to a full version of Linux on the PS3, not just a baby watered down version. With all of the attention being directed towards backing up games, Re-initializing Linux on all PS3 console versions has been over looked for too long.
Turning the PS3 into a PPC is #1 in my book, and it will eventually be done. How long? 3D emulations and homebrew workshops here we come. Does ASbestOS even really work, or even the new downgrade sight that takes your serial number? Hmm if we could find a way.
"The hypervisor would, in fact, make it easier to let YDL run on the PS3. It would take the weird PS3 hardware, and make it look like a regular PC.
Also - don't forget about the Sony Zego. This was basically a rack mounted PS3 that ran YDL. Unlike normal PS3s, this box didn't have hypervisor restrictions on the RSX, and YDL could load the nVidia graphics drivers without any modifications.
So - if you could load Linux from the XMB, I believe you would still have a hypervisor layer - since all PS3 games run under a hypervisor layer - but you would have access to the RSX. If you could get a bootloader to load stock YDL, then I would imagine you would just use the nVidia Linux drivers for 3D video."
whats the BIG deal with the otherOS ??? it was a ****ing turtle and had no rsx access ,u culd do nothing with it ,there was a port of the xbmc to it and was scraped as it was SOOOOO slow that except browsing the web and run emulators it was useless ....at least to me it was
people alwayz wanted to hack the ps3 with or without the removal of the otheros
and why was it removed??geohot was tampering with the system and sony saw a threat and tryed to eliminate it
FCKIN PIRATE![]()
Look, pirates, homebrew folks and geeks that just need to put linux on anything they can find are three groups.
They overlap, sure. They have some of the same motivations, namely to open up systems to allow anything to be run on them. This doesn't mean that everyone endorses or practices piracy.
I want to be able to run backups from the hard drive so I can put the disks away, and because there's no reason in the modern day and age to be reliant on disks.
I want to be able to run linux on the machine because I want to run linux on everything. Don't ask me why, I have no idea. But I sometimes spend months
at a time hacking devices for this purpose.
Piracy, not so much. I have a cracked Wii, a PS2 with a hard drive full of games and a bunch of other stuff hacked to all hell, but all of the games are either homebrew or things I own.
Some of the devs clearly object to piracy because they disagree with it. Some don't release pirate-friendly stuff because they don't want to be sued.
So think what you like, but blanket statements like these are annoying and also lend strength to the people who want to shut this all down, claiming that it's all just about piracy. Pirates and geeks have similar requirements, that doesn't make them the same thing.
