Playstation 3 Hacking – Linux Is Inevitable
Playstation 3 Hacking – Linux Is Inevitable –
09-10-2010,04:42 PM
Michael Steil has posted an interesting article on his blog entitled "Linux Is Inevitable."
In the talk “Why Silicon Security is still that hard” by Felix Domke at the 24th Chaos Communication Congress in 2007 (in which he described how he hacked the Xbox 360, and bushing had a cameo at the end explaining how they hacked the Wii), I had a little part, in which I argued that “Linux Is Inevitable”: If you lock down a system, it will eventually get hacked. In the light of the recent events happening with PlayStation 3 hacking, let’s revisit them.

I would be more interested in reading about anybody actually working on getting Linux re-enabled.

I don't really agree with the article at one point it states that Piracy was never the motivation on the table when it clearly lists Piracy as the motivation for the PS2 on top of that linux is hardly the motivation for hacking consoles piracy is far ahead in terms of motivation than linux is imo. Even if linux ports and homebrew is the starting point it always leads to piracy because piracy is usually the ultimate goal
Hackers can put as many disclaimers up as they want I personally don't believe for a second that the hackers aren't enjoying piracy on their own time.
No doubt the removal of OtherOS sparked the interest into hacking the PS3 but I believe it was more of a F you Sony this is what you get for being dicks kind of thing instead of people actually wanting linux back as far as I'm concerned when the PS3 had OtherOS it was hardly utilized and homebrew devs didn't even care about it because the beauty of homebrew is the apps that are created to run under the systems main environment (can anyone name any "homebrew" that was created for the Linux port on PS3 I doubt you can without searching google for a while but within days of the PS3 being hacked homebrew running under gameOS has already been started and we are already starting to see emulators pop up like the DC emulator but under linux no one cared.)
I am in no way saying no one used the Linux btw I'm just saying that the OtherOS didn't feed the homebrew dev needs.
The way to the Light is through a Door of Darkness.

My memory is a little fuzzy but if I remember correctly the cheating devices namely the gameshark and action replay (can't recall which came first) where used for the first "hacking" attempts on the ps2.
So if you count datels or Mad catz efforts as a hacking attempt (and you should because they where) then the ps2 was originally hacked to allow products unauthorized by Sony to work, said products just happened to allow piracy and homebrew as a side effect.

You're right, the gameshark in combination with a mod chip allowed cd ps2 games to run. It was a long time ago.

Can't wait til OtherOS gets re-enabled. I never got the chance to try it out since I bought my PS3 after the whole drama unfolded.
Visit store.brewology.com often for up to date HomeBrew downloads.

I also have my OtherOS on both my PS3's. In my mind instead of getting getting it back I hope a Flavor of Linux will be able to install directly in XMB and not have to worry about OtherOS with the exploit available now. It seems more logical at the moment but what do I know. lol
I was extremly pissed at the removal of useing Linux and believed from the start that Sony was gonna pay for it in the end.
Here's to hoping we get to use Linux without the HV restrictions.
My 2 cents.

The reason no one really released any linux apps is because we basically had "baby linux" on the ps3. We didn't have access to all 7 cores, nor full RAM or GPU access. A DC emulator wouldn't have existed in the first place because the graphics couldn't be emulated. Now that we have the PS3 wide open devs are taking a crack at it because of the new resources that are available.
I won't address the other parts of your post, because I feel the same. The same warez groups that release music/games/movies etc always say buy it if you like, but they honestly could care less, and they know people don't end up buying whatever it was that they pirated.

most of that is true but if I remember correctly according to what I think I remember geohot saying you did have full gpu access, its just the drivers to take advantage of it did not exist and since the system was so locked down it was hard to figure out how to wright one.
