To add some stuff over here, the Official Sony HDD is being sent out to the FFXI Beta Testers. They were shipped yesterday to all the beta testers.

Also to let the modchip users know, most of you know already but for those who don't know about it. You will not be able to use your modchip if you install the HDD. Because the HDD will simply lock out your chip and the only way to get around it is by pulling out the official HDD. The only confirmed chip that can get over this is the DMS by using the "Fast Boot" feature on the 1.6c and 1.8 Flash Bios. I heard about some other modchips having the "Fast Boot" feature but they have not been confirmed working yet.

and for those who want the HDD without FFXI and don't feel like paying 99$ for it. I was told by one of the employees at GameStop that the company is GOING to sell the HDD without FFXI after all the FFXI hype goes down. So if you want, you can just wait for a while and grab the HDD for cheaper without FFXI.

Damn good thing I invested in that DMS3 now....as for the Fast Boot mode being the only way, I thought that the new v1.8 firmware was HDD compatible....am I being deceived on this one? I had the Beta HDD and the Magic 3.1 I had at the time obviously didn't work with it, however, I was led to believe that the new DMS3 1.8 was fully BETA HDD compatible, my worries were about Sony putting updates on the retail HDD to block out even Fast Boot options. Any ideas?

They can't because the Fast Boots skips the Main Screen which allows the PS2 to boot the HDD and other things, that's why Fast Boot skips all that and jumps straight into the game

if you don't have a dms3, the trick is to leave the network adapter loosley hooked, and unhook it to play backups, that's what I did with my beta hdd

yeah, u have to keep it loosely hooked otherwise it wears out your screws like on my NA, I had a Magic 3.1 at the time I had a Beta HDD. It's stilll just a pain in the ass, and I can see more cheap mod people moving to DMS3 due to the constant annoyance. That's why I upgraded to the DMS3, cuz I knew I would want the HDD, but I didn't want the annoyance that I went through with my Beta HDD I had. Not only that, but I wanted the native DVD-R and progressive scan reading capabilities of the v9, as well as the built in IR.

So does fast boot mode boot PS1 games as well? Or does this only work with PS2 games? If not, does that mean that PS1 backups will not boot at all with the DMS3 and HDD installed, or does the blocking of backups only pertain to PS2 backups? That's one of my worries, as that would mean again that I would have to pull the HDD in and out. Something I wanna avoid.
