I haven't had access to my PS3 for a while so I'm not sure if it's on 3.41; I think the jailbreak technique can only be used on 3.41 so, presuming I'm on something lower than that, is it possible to just update to 3.41 or will I be forced to go to 3.42?

Yes. You can download FW 3.41 and put it on a thumb drive.
