The folks over at http://www.duomodchip.com (aka http://www.bearcity.com) have released another incarnation of the Duo modchip, again using our famous in-house ICE Team code, called Duo2 SE. It should be no surprise that this release comes shortly after a new code update by the ICE team to reduce the wire count on 50x consoles and polish compatability with v10 consoles. You can find this mod shipping very soon to most trashy mod vendors.

Just as bad as the Ripper team, anyone else expecting the Ripper Plus soon?

BTW whats the wire count like on the new Ice code for 5000X units? Is it still 17 or 18 for V8 or lower?

this news is rather odd. Anyone who knows who I am will know that I have been testing the ice range of codes for a long time. And I get cheap feebies from modchip manufacturer by posing as a large buyer (guess I shouldn't mention this). That was also the reason why I use to be able to list all the mods that existed.

Anyway back to why this news is rather weird.

    1) I have been testing ice codes as you know. I found that the current codes have a major boot rate problem. Does this actualy exist in the duo2se chip?

    2) ice code are comptible with jap machines. Verified by me on a 50006 machine. From what I understand, the duo chips never worked on jap machines. Someone even said they couldn't get it to work on a jap machine here.

    3) The the only thing the duo2 got rid of is the y wire from what I can tell from the diagram. Ice code ever had the Y wire.

    4) current ice code has problems if you connect the F cable.

    5) when the original duo2 came out, lots of people tested on v10 and they all so very favourable result from the reviews I saw. while the ice code is still buggy on v10. ( I know cos I am cheap since I use a a converted magic 3.1 to modify machines.) But I guess it is better than buying the low cost chips that might not even have any quality control.

    6) I remember SK tested a duo2 that doesn't use Y awhile back. I will see if I can locate the link.

    7) ice codes have bugs, I've emailed both the guys regularly about the bugs.

    8) have the guy who actually wrote the above comment have tested the duo2se or any of the ice code? Because if you have, you will know what bugs I have been talking about in the ice code. Do these bugs exist in the duo chip?

Personally, I think the top post sounds more like either one of the following.

    1) They guy who posted it got all this from the "source".
    2) an angry chip maker who have lost a lot of money because no one is buying their v9/v10 chip that is definitly using the ice code.
    3) or whoever the duo guys are, are being make the scrapegoat for all the people who had been making money directly from the ice v9/v10 chip. uisng as a plan to divert attention from the guys who are making a killing.

If I was still a mod. I would edit out all the names, just in case they have nothing to do with it. Plus mention what I have just said and let people decide for themselves.

I find this all rather interesting... (now please remember I like to stay neutral and don't take sides other than the side of facts...)

I can not confirm or deny that the original Duo2 or even the Duo was maybe in its' early versions based on the ice code.

But what I can confirm is that I was sent samples of what I coined as the Duo2.1 on the 27th of may. This version did not use the Y wire previously tied to ground to put it in V9/ V10 mode.

I also know they tested this version for at least 1.5 months prior to sending it to me! This is what the SE is based on!

    Subject: Some information for you

    HI,

Basically I am writing to let you know that we are sending you 3 chips.

Plus we was told to tell you the following. But you cannot repeat the message to anyone else. I think it was directed to you presonnally.

" the diagrams are exactly the same as the duo 2, but it does not require point y at all. Plus the code that is on the chip that we are getting someone to send to you is over 1.5 months old. You are probably wondering why the current duo2 have Y and why we didn't just used the new code. The old duo2 code when through through 3 months of testing by some installers in asia. So which code do you think we should put in? As an end user you probably prefer the throughly tested code"
Now I know that they said not to repeat this message but I think it is only fair to pass it on to back them up...

Especially now that the Duo2 SE is in circulation - there is little need for secracy anymore.

The quote was probably directed to me because I was one of the first if not actually the first to work out that the Y wire was a mode select wire only and could be tied to any ground and not just to the bios ground. See I have no issues with being an honest tester!

This said I would have to say whether based on ICE code or not they have as was suggested by others obviously customised and improved the code themselves quite significanlty.

I personally am not taking either side so please resist the urg to flame me - I just like the chip as it is a nice cheap solution to stock for all station types - plus it looks kind of cool!

Obviously the Duo2 chip was released even earlier... I got my first samples on around the 5/5/2004

    - no actual ice code exist that works from v1-v10 from what I know. unless of course the two guys behind the ice code have made one that they never told me about or ask me to test for them.

There must be a few versions of the ICE code floating around(I'd like to see one that allows booting from mem card Does the Duo2 use an SX48 and a 74HC73? Wasnt the ICE code the first to use a 74HC73? I believe this site is using the ICE code in their Rambus mod...
