    George Hotz, the infamous iPhone and Playstation 3 hacker, has given up trying to fully unlock the PS3,

    Citing his resignation of Twitter earlier, the hacker stated that;

    “It was a cool ride, and I learned a lot. Maybe I’ll do in the next few days, a formal reunion."
    Hotz, aka geohot, procured access to the Sony Playstation 3 some time ago, including bypassing some of the on-board security software. Sony responded by releasing a firmware update that prevented the use of alternative operating systems to be used on the console, such as Linux.

    He went on to state that he simply hacked the iPhone because he was bored, stating that he felt people took it far too seriously- it is only a phone, after all.

    It appears that the task of fulling unlocking the Playstation 3 was just too difficult for Hotz, and many fans may have a long wait ahead of them if they wish to see alternative operating systems back on their Sony console.

    His Twitter account appears to have since been pulled from the site.

    Im not surprized he is giving up.........i already knew he'd fail at the PS3, he didnt seem to interested in it from the start. His only interest was to brag he was the first to hack it...although we know he wasnt, but the Press helped to give him that title.

    Wait so the guy who said wait for custom firmware is throwing in the towel? Who didn't see this coming, looks like the rabbit is on the tennis ball.

    Well, i had my PS3 updated a week ago, to play the latest game i bought. It's a shame to lose one of the functionalities. My purchase would be unplayable if i didn't update (talk about forcing your customers to give up on a feature). I would have waited for a CW firmware that has the Other OS functionality + access to PSN. But i think it would take a while before someone comes with a solution that Sony tackles with another update.

    I saw this coming a long time ago since who would want to keep doing this when everyone was bashing him constantly. I'm actually suprised he didn't quit awhile ago since I would have.

    PS. Would you blame the guy who insulted another person if that other person went out on a killing spree because of it?

    it's funny how pretty much everybody praised geohot when he released his exploit. now everybody calls him a joke/coward/whatever.

    I saw this coming a long time ago since who would want to keep doing this when everyone was bashing him constantly. I'm actually suprised he didn't quit awhile ago since I would have.
    yeah, i think there is a significant problem when hacking consoles - a crowd of ungrateful gamers starts stalking you. and this is what happened now. it was similar with psp, and i can assume it will only get worse in the future.

    and by saying "gamer" there, i mean it in an insulting way.

    whether people like him or not, it's a significant discovery and it really opened a bunch of new options to ps3 hacking - full hv dump from retail firmware is no small thing and might lead to something.

    personally i think he did it just for fame and publicity, and i don't like it. that said, i think he already did enough, it's time for other people to take it his exploit and use it as a base for new tools.

    removal of linux support from sony was to be expected, although it was quite an underhanded move to many customers who paid extra for that feature.

    sony has a track record of cutting out various features of their products. it's just that previously they could do it only with new hardware revisions. now they can just remove it from new firmware.
