We would need the dev_flash contents of a PS3 that is on v3.42.

looks like if you simply copy the files from dev_flash from a previous firmware, we can load it? but then how would I get the files from a previous firmware without running JB and dumping via ftp

Nothing is written to your NAND, no changes are permanent, once you turn off the power, your PS3 is back to the way it originally was running your v3.41 firmware!
Could this lead to loading 3.42+ custom firmware so we can access PSN, etc -- however of course, Sony will still be able to detect you JB your device even if you don't access backup manager?

Its a huge step towards it. But as of yet there isn't a dump of 3.42's retail firwmare to load, probably a few more obsticles than that in the way too.
