There is a dude that did this editing the UPDATE.PUPs using the normal XMB updater, but obviously it only allowed updating. His name escapes me though.
Dare I say it does this prove that blu-ray checks for app launching can be suspended, for those with fully broken drives?
Someone on here by the name of Warren already did something like this, by editing some file or another in the ps3updat.pup to get it to skip the bluray checks. The problem with this method is that after upgrading the console, you couldn't run anything. He had altered the firmware to allow the Install Packages option, and you could in fact install packages, but when you tried to run them (say, a backup manager or an FTP client) you would be stuck with a black screen. Something about how the system checks the bluray controller board for authentication even when running things directly off the hard drive, and freezing up when it couldn't find it.
Unless this method fixes that problem, then it's just as pointless as Warren's method. "Yay, I can upgrade my firmware even though I'm missing my bluray drive! Oh, my machine's still worthless."

How do i access to service mode?
You need a USB device to act as a JIG. Most of the dedicated USB devices sold over the last few months can be set to work in this mode, as can PSFreedom installations ont he N900 (and I suspect other phones and devices).Quote:

this was done on a 3.55,CECHL03, FAT, 80 GB, without Blueray drive, 3.41 modified (the one coming with the downgraders file).
Now what would be nice to go along with this, would be a way for those of us currently with no blu-ray playback due to the dodgy 3.41 downgrade method, to reset the revocation list to default in order to re-enable blu-ray playback.
Probably wishful thinking on my behalf.
