    It seems like almost 5,000 PSP's have been returned for repair since its initial launch. People have been experiencing issues with the unresponsive behaviour of the SQUARE button on the unit.

    Have any of you lucky PS2-Scene'rs who have one of these cool units, had the same sort of problems/issues?

    Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi has defended a design decision in the PlayStation Portable which has led to a high rate of returns for the console, saying that it had a "clear purpose" and "wasn't a mistake".

    Speaking with Japanese magazine Nikkei Business, Kutaragi revealed that around 4,800 PlayStation Portables have been returned for repair since the console launched last month - around 0.6 per cent of the shipped units of the system.

    The bulk of these repairs have been due to problems with the square button on the handheld, which is less responsive than the others on the fascia due to being too close to the edge of the system's screen.

    However, Kutaragi was unapologetic about the design of the console, saying that the button was created in this way on purpose and that users and developers will "have to adapt" to this quirk of the controls.

    "I didn't want the PSP's LCD screen to become any smaller than this, nor did I want its machine body to become any larger," he told Nikkei Business. "The button's location is [engineered] on purpose. It's according to specifications. This is something that we've created, and this is our specification. There was a clear purpose to it, and it wasn't a mistake."

    I don't know about that. I would say that your product should work fully and the consumer should not "have to adapt" to use it. It reminds me of Apple calling 'random' cool since they did not include a screen with their iPod Shuffle. I'm thinking with a little more R&D and maybe a delay it could have been fixed. I anticipate that it would be fixed within the future versions.

    Well there is another bug with the handheld, if you move the unit a certain way it would eject the umcdr wile yiu are playing on the unit,it literely spits it out,there is a shor video clip flouting on the web showing how it happens.

    Well I've been lucky to have one for the last few weeks, and I can feel the square button has a bit more of a 'click' to it, but its been working fine (I have just completed Ridge racers a second time )

    As for the ejecting media - I cant help thinking its a hoax, Ive tried it and I can't get it to eject like that - Not unless I hold the flap shut, hit eject so that the flap is only held closed by my finger, then release it.

    Standard Sony response to any problems.... 'There is no problem' LOL!

    On my 1st Sony DVD player the picture lost sync with the sound. Sony's 'Official' response.... 'There is no problem, the disc is faulty'.. yet it played fine on every other machine! They ended up quietly replacing the firmware after about 4 months (to those that complained, no official announcement was made).

    My 1st Minidisc player suffered appaling skipping... again, 'There is no problem', but the minidisc was replaced with a newer 'non-skipping' model 2 weeks laster. The original model was discontinued. No offical announcement was made.

    Seems to be standard fare for Sony... just blame the consumer and slip in an upgrade by the back door. No product recalls required!

    I bought a PSP the day before yesterday. Let's just say I did not believe what I saw. It's just jawdropping. Screenshots and videos don't quite cut it.

    However, yes, the square button is working less than optimal. You have to push it near to its right edge to get 100% response rate. If you push it normally in the center, like the other buttons, it's about 75%. When you push near to the left edge, nothing happens.

    Yeah alot of people are having problems with there psp.



    The umd just randomly flying out is one of them.
    Hope sony fixes the problems before the us release.

    I could not get it to eject deliberately no matter how I tried to bend the unit (without trying to break it apart, of course).
