Now if Sony were more enlightened, what they would do is in their next update not blacklist geo's key pair, but restrict any applications using it sufficiently to prevent piracy.

No, we can do anything(!) now, with two nearly insignificant exceptions;
1. decrypting PSN game files, which really isn't that important anyway.
2. signing homebrew with a proper random key, instead of geohot's pre-generated one.

Developers are not hindered by any of these issues! If geohot's keypair is revoked in the future and the NPDRM keys ever make it into the wild, it'll be trivial to simply re-sign the homebrew and it'll start working again.

It's just a matter of time, know-how and effort.
