Thanks for the clarification. So presumably drive region is irrelevant and is set by the PS3?

You can marry the drive up no problem, but it will not correct the BD playback issue on a 256meg PS3.

The use of the 16meg Ps3 will allow us to control and know what was the highest (if you use the latest release) BD to take out the guess work.
Nothing more, nothing less.
If you know the highest DRL that was last played you could just put the DRL files back into devflash3.
I am still in testing phase, so there could be something still to be discovered in the files.
There are also still files missing from the set that may turn up and solve the problem once and for all, Free_bdp.self etc

But the method you're describing with a 16mb PS3 can that be done with a 256mb PS3 which has a working bluray drive?
Because i've got 2x 60GB 1 with the Bluray problem, the other one is ok.
It's odd, my 60gb PHAT PAL didn't break blu-ray playback after the downgrade.
After coming out of service mode, I tried it and it said something about encryption keys not being paired, but could be paired with a firmware upgrade, so I went up to 3.50 and it all worked.
Then I did a further downgrade later that night and it did break it, but since I knew the last blu-ray it played, it wasn't an issue.
hey mark can you buy or mod a splitter cable then try it on 2 drives at the same time see if they both run?
I did some testing a while ago, downgrading/upgrading and checking the logs afterwards. It seems downgrading below 3.41 gives you the bluray problem.

That's why it's weird, because I had to go to 3.41 modified, then 2.40 to get this to work, as per the procedure and it was fine after that.
I don't know the history of the PS3 before I got it, but would it not break if it had never played a blu-ray before?
Oh wow this is really good news. Funny thing I just procurred a ylod with working blue drive that matched my jb that the drive broke so I am happy to hear this news. ALthough I have a question for those with experience. The two ps3 are exact same model and manufactured same exact month sept 2007. I took the working drive out and swapped it with my logic board on my working ps3 (the logic board being the rectangle board on the outside of the blueray drive???) I put this new setup in my working drive and all my work still and run but the drive will only read Audio cds and DVD movies. IT plays those fine. It cyles through the different color lasers (purple and red) I can see that but It won't read Bluray games or PS 1 games. I don't understand though cause if it reads Audio Cds shouldn't it read and play ps 1 games?? Anyhow I heard that if the logic board isn't married to the mother board it will play audio and dvd but not ps3 games? could this be the case here? I got it second hand and the drive never work and it had been open so anything is possible? But still plays homebrew and what. Next step would to swap the logic boards back and remarry the driveto ps3?? What do you guys think? Those who repair them let me know. Thanks I really appreciate it.
I don't know about what the "norm" is, but my unmatched drive wouldn't play CD's, DVD's, PS1 games, PS2 games, PS3 games or blu rays and the drive was out the same model PS3. Now it's paired, everything works.
