Yep. There is a version 1 HRL inside ALL firmware updates.
Downgrading writes it to the drive without checking current version.
Normal upgrade process checks version against version in the firmware and ignores if higher (which it always is)

Edit: This new board is shocking and slow as a wet week.
No, HRL is stored on the drive. DRL is stored in Dev_Flash3
Edit:Sorry I was half asleep still.
The DRL is overwritten NOT the HRL when it downgrades.
The DRL is still stored as above in the Update.pup file.
IF we could decrypt edit then re-encrypt the BD firmware then all this would be easily solved.
well whats funny is i downgraded with the QA flag firmware, and what was crazy is it didnt start messing up till a few days after i downgraded to try the Official otherOS on 3.15. then after i seen i didnt like linux on the ps3 anyways i just stuck with VMware on xp and linux owns like this. anyways i updated to 3.55 OFW (all this is after i installed the qa flag firmware and then qa flagged my machine)then i stuck kmeaw 3.55 on a thumb drive and went to install it and instead of it jailbreaking 3.55 like it always did, it sent me back to 3.15, crazy right? anyways i did this a few times thinking i made a mistake and put the wrong pup on the thumb drive and i got the same results even after downloading the kmeaw pup file again from a different source. then i got the idea to just install kmeaw from 3.15 and it worked great like that. but now, a week or so has past and its like every time i stick a game in my ps3 it will play fine the first time, but it will never play again if i eject it. i used God of war 3, took it out to let my bud borrow it and stuck killzone 2 in there to boot my games with. it worked fine then i got GOW 3 back stuck it back in there and it didnt work, then i tried killzone 2 again and it didnt work either, so i tried my GOW collections disc and it worked flawless. i wonder if this is a problem with the laser or wyf is going on?
p.s. sorry for the long message
so when it writes it to the nand it overwrites the existing drl files? and this would explain why the drl's i have now are crap right -.-
what exactly is the HRL? can i use this to determine what drl's i may need? or is it pointless if i dont know what bd's have been played in my ps3?
and finally thanks guys for your help so far. if i got a used ps3 thats the same model as mine cechg01, could i marry the bdrom from the used ps3 to my exsisting ps3 and restore with a bluray disc?
Noob, can you translate that into english please.
As for the second part, the DRL is the key on the PS3 side to allow bluray playback.
The HRL is the (for want of better words) lock on the drive.
You need the right key to open the lock to allow the movie to play.
Thats about as simple as I can explain it.
I couldn't find this in the thread anywhere.. can i just marry any type of drive i want to any console? My laser is bad, replacement laser burnt out after 30 minutes, and i'm thinking my drive board is suspect...
Also a cechg01 as many seem to be having this problem.
As long as the drive is the same connector as your last.
IDE - IDE, or sata to sata.
I am in the middle of writing a new guide, so anyone who is still confused, now is the time to speak.
