magic3 actually peform about the same on both us and jap console and slightly worse in pal consoles.
The only reason why magic 3 is used in asia is cos of the price. (not used much in HK though. In HK it is mainly apple 2/apple 39006 and bluechip with a few people using NH3)
You think they wouldn't mind messiah 2 performance for the same price as magic 3?????
Dont worry, the Asians are now starting to get their Messiah 2 pro's at the right prices !
Here in the PAL countries, the same thing is happening within the next week.

This is slightl off-topic but you can get magic3.1 clones of good quality for 25 euros including freight, messiah for 60 euros including freight and DMS3 is about 88 euros including freight. The questions is if it is worth the extra money buying a dms3 or even the messiah2 ???

Cheaper PRO's are circulating than even Euro's from the original people. Not as cheap as magics due to the cheap part of course, magics are simply dirt-cheap to manufacture anyway.

How about availability? Are these chips backordered or not really mass manufactured as of yet?

There's 10,000 moving into circulation this month so they will be abundant and available everywhere shortly.

Wasn't this chip supposed to have a method of booting quickly? Or am I confused? I think it was this chip (you are supposed to hold start or select when booting). Can anyone confirm if this works?

Yeah...I remember something vaguely about this fast booting method. I'm assuming since it hasn't been mentioned again, that it's been removed because of the need to select the boot methods from the controller now.
