Just got the good word on IRC that Crystal Chip release 13 is now out. Quoted news from the CC website:

can you throw this stuff no a cd-rw or dvd-rw? never tried...
silentace: you can use RW if your PS2 can read them.
now we just need hacked scripts. :D

v9 should be able to read RW, I've used DVD+RW in v9 and v10 without problems, not sure about DVD-RW or CD-RW though, but you can always try it. :)
you can always use a special cable (USB fro your PC to your PSX2) to do the update.
