Today, there was a presentation at the 23C3 (23rd Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin, Germany called "Console Hacking 2006." The speaker was legendary console hacker Felix Domke (alias tmbinc). He shed some interesting light on possible exploits for the PS3 and Wii. This video needs to be seen by anyone interested in console homebrew/hacking. It is very interesting and, at times, hilarious.

The video can be downloaded HERE (140mb OGM file playable with VLC).

If anyone can provide mirrors, please do so.

I disagree on the acceptability of the ps3-linux compromise. When support for the graphics hardware is added, then it will be acceptable IMO.

hmm i disagree. I don't think there will ever be an acceptable level until users are able to run their own apps on the native hardware on their own terms.

Sure, but at least this is better then XNA Express. Anyway, like on the PSP, there will be a constant release of new firmwares to close any holes found in the system software and the only barrier to running nearly anything in linux (save commercial PS3 games) is lack of access to the GPU.

I suspect they will never permit that, i would love to see it but i'm basically a pessimist, the crippled PS2 Linux support leaved a bad taste in my mouth...

so correct me if i'm wrong but here's what i gathered:

Wii will possibly be hacked with his 'backdoor 2' method
PS3 is crippled but possible...didn't sound totally promising but it'll have to do
360 sucks (but I could have told you that!)

    So time will tell...
    v4 PS2 w/ Network Adapter

i wont sit here and argue about XNA express, I have never used it nor do i own a 360 (or a ps3 for that matter). I will agree from what i heard, it sounds like crap. However at least they are giving users a gaming development layer. Lets look at the facts here in a way that tmbinc put it with just a little twist.

    360
    .......
    300 core system
    100 XNA express membership
    monitored homebrew gaming capabilities
no current hope of running unmonitored homebrew
    no hope of running linux
    .................
    400 total

    ps3
    ........
    600+ if you are lucky
    free other OS installation
no current hope of running monitored homebrew
no current hope of running unmonitored homebrew
only hope is to run linux
    .........................
600+ total if you are lucky

Sorry, i can make a cheaper linux PC that's much less crippled.

Rather than just a free linux environment that runs rather horribly and doesn't take full use of the 600+ USD hardware you just purchased.
What would you suggest be done in terms of implementing some advanced graphics or better yet, a stand-alone non "other OS" in order to access some more gaming related hardware at your disposal? You would have to leave in sony's proprietary integrity layer or hypervisor.
