but can someone tell me why we need this?
or why they would want this?
i mean for computer uses kind of lame
and for hacking well we have jailbreak now
so what the point of having this?

I am very happy to hear this.
This is the main reason why I would buy ps3.
I always waited and thought that ps3 will be hacked and hackers will enable Other OS in fat
and slim models.
I would personally install Ubuntu on my PS3.
HACKERS PLEASE DO NOT STOP. BRING BACK OTHER OS TO PS3.

LETS DO IT HACKERS, LETS SHOW SONY THAT COMMUNITY IS ALWAYS STRONGER!!!!!!!

It would be amazing if we got full RSX access in Linux. But I think it's going to need a lvl1 exploit to enable that.

It is necessary if you want to install the OS to the internal hard drive. However, Other OS mode really just boots to a bootloader that is installed in flash. From there you can boot an OS from any medium that the bootloader supports (USB, SD/MMC/CF/MS, CD/DVD/BD, network). So Other OS mode is still somewhat usable even without an HDD partition.
