Gitbrew have said they have found are in the process of finding the PS3 root key. But it's a per console key. Which means that the only way a CFW would come out is in the form of PS3MFW and you would have to do some of the work completely on your own. As you would have to manually get your root key, yourself. Which in all honesty is fine by me! If I learn something while hacking my PS3 I consider that one hell of a bonus!

I just had the strangest idea, but what the hell.

Isn't the PS3 HDD encrypted with a per-console key? What are the chances that key is the same used to encrypt bootldr and metldr?

Id be fine with that too but I have a feeling you'd have to install linux to do it and ATM I really dont want to install linux onto my ps3 due to the fact that I'd have to reformat.
I know there are ways of saving saves, data, trophies, etc but I dont have a surefire way to back all of that up atm and really would rather just not have to reformat my ps3.
I suppose if it ends up being the only way I would, but hopefully after some time someone will come out with a method that doesn't require a linux partition.

So, I suppose that a new CFW for 3.56+ could come as soon as next week or as late as months from now right? I was about to sell my non-cfw PS3 (3.61) to get a brand new slim with 3.50 (Uncharted 2 + Karate Kid movie bundle) so that I could get CFW... Should I wait or should I just sell it and get this new one?

buy a cheap hdd to make the linux partition on, the ps3 will recognize your existing hdd when you swap it back as it's already paired with it and won't need to reformat it

This would actually be a good idea. Especially if people had multiple systems. Granted the HDD would get formatted each time, but one cheap drive with 20GB would be really inexpensive compared to the alternatives of accidentally wiping all your DLC.

A 320Gb USB hard disk costs less than 1 PS3 game and a 500Gb equals it almost.

You don't need to backup your original games so unless you have a 1Tb internal drive those sizes are big enough for backing up your internal.

    always backup using FTP
