mM creates links/shortcuts to all your XMB Video file in its "XMB Video Files" subfolder so that you can quickly play any video (via mM's showtime) without browsing countless folders (you can see the files in mmOS /ps3_home/video or in game modes when you browse Video -> PS3 HDD -> XMB Video). This was an automated function in earlier versions, but for a long time mM won't do that unless you use "Create Links To Video Files" option in "Video" column of mM's game modes.

The PS3's 'information/check' function in XMB counts these links as actual files hence the 40GB report. If you wish, go to mmOS, double click the "multiMAN" icon and go into "XMB Video Files" subfolder and delete all files (these are shortcuts - don't worry). Then exit to XMB and re-check the size of mM.
