Maybe this will make it easier to understand:
1) Find way to install code to ps3
2) create code for the ps3
Yes, but a .pkg is not installing a code. That is what people are getting twisted. All this allows is a different avenue to do what the PS3 is already capable of doing, installing signed code. We need to access the PS3's files, and change them, and run code signed by us, currently there is no way to do that on 4.00 unless I'm missing something.
@hollywood + everyone else - this is only early stage development for brand new, off the shelf, never been on custom firmware PS3 systems. It is not a major find, but it is absolutely necessary in the long run for the functionality that we get currently on 3.55 to work on 4.00. You are right that it does not install code. It just installs pkg files which amount to pretty much nothing more than archives much like zip or rar files. I will say it one more time - This is mainly for developers to use at this point in time. It says so right next to the thread on the main page before you click on it to read it. It takes time and efforts from many people to make the big developments happen. Most times they are combinations of smaller efforts by many people. This is just one more step towards a bigger goal. And yes kakarotoks has done it already, but sometimes it takes sharing smaller discoveries/tools to make the bigger ones easier to find/create and also enables more people to be able to work on a problem
Yes, installing the packages is the easiest part, that is why we can do it first... That is why this was released first... Duh

How could we do this already? I don't remember being able to put a official game update package on a USB stick, and install it using the XMB straight from the USB stick.
This is progress.
Actually there is a use for this even for the regular joe on of4.00,
if you dont want yout ps3 on-line (or cant) since many ppl still only care about single player games, you now have a way to install updates and game patches from usb, this a feature that should allways have been available from day one with the ps3, on any firmware!
No a .pkg installer is not the first step by a long shot, if that's what you're saying. I'm saying don't get everyone's hopes up just so they can be disappointed, then come on here asking "what's going on with that?". There is no use for this for end users other than keeping your name in the spotlight, there are plenty of dev channels to work on something like this, which right now is basically useless. All it is, is another way to install demos, or previously purchased content, without online.
