Added Functionality to XMB
Added Functionality to XMB –
09-20-2010,03:59 AM
Recently, KrisAbsinthe emailed the PS3HAX network yesterday with a project he has been working on that seems quite interesting. Apparently he has managed to add some more functions to the PS3 XMB, including maybe the reactivation of OtherOS and more.
Here is his Proof Of Concept screenshot below:
Ok I found a way to add some more functions to the XMB. As a POC I edited the PSN XML file swapping the and I left all the functions in their place, just swapped which View id was allowed to use which functions. Here is a screen shot of the new PSN menu, still not able to sign in due to Software Update. However there are quite a few of these I can swap, more to come!
UPDATE: ORIGINALLY I SAID THIS WOULD PROBABLY NOT BRING BACK OTHEROS.
Now I have to move that to the “It Just might” catagory. I realized that I was using an old flash image from before I installed otheros with the EBOOT.BIN swap method. Technically I can add ANY entry I want. and it can point to any file I want. So Maybe I can make it work, DONT GET YOUR HOPES TOO HIGH…But remain cautiously optimistic.

This is nothing more than unlock some debug options which are default visible and fully functional on debug fw on debug PS3.
There's a lot more interesting in Settings > Debug Settings
I hope i could in future remove this f* pss icon shortcut in Game tab and AXN Player...

Well he's saying that maybe OtherOS could return through this method. That's good news for adding homebrew features to the XMB later on then I would imagine.
Also have to agree with you on removing the PSN stuff from XMB if we aren't able to use them anyway.
What intreagues me the most is the possibility of adding a homebrew 'What's new?' so maybe you could point your PS3 at a certain address and have messages scroll across the top about the latest homebrew releases.
Not sure how feasable that is but I like the idea!

@reldas - Thanks for the news update. - I clean it up a bit, and moved your post to the front page.
Yep, basically he enabled more "debug" features, if you have a larger "shell code" this could be done directly on start-up by the Jailbreak device.
But it is good to see progress everyday, hopefully all the ideas will come together and we will see a fully working tweeted up "lvl2" firmware with more features for the end-user.
Still hard to fully get what we truely want, until we can get into "lvl1" access!

@Xeauron: I guess that a feature like that would be "an add-on" for the existing "shell", so you're talking about an extra homebrew program (like an RSS ticker) that could attach to a custom version of the shell. And, again, I guess, that would be more work than (ha-ha, Sony) pointing the "what's new in PSN" to a different server datastream ;-)
That way, we'd be able to have the feature you mentioned without changes/aditions to the existing shell or a new, custom shell.

That would be awesome if we could change the PSN server info stream. Reminds me of the XBox 1 hacking days.

Yeah that's exactly what I mean, not sure how feasible that is though (How much time and effort it would take to implement / maintain if it is indeed possible)

Yes you can make changes to all the xml files, except category_sysconf, doesn't seem to have any effect.
I have managed to swapp the menues, and add new "shortcuts". And i have found the missing "Memory Card Utility (PS/PS2)".
