Um, Sony intentionally shipped out PS2s with cheap lasers. They aren't innocent. The slim PS2s overheat, and began with cheap lasers again! Not to mention I've had the same experience with their other laser products (DVD burners, CD burners, DVD players, etc). The only laser products of theirs I have that haven't had a problem with are my Minidisc players and my PSOne! They also used Maxtor drives, which in my career I've calculated a 15% failure rate. That's out of a couple hundred drives and generally these failures were within a couple of months.
My Xbox 360 hasn't had a problem, and I've been using it since launch. A lot of these problems are likely to be user error. The only problems I've had have been with a couple of games that were rushed (PDZ and Quake 4 minor bugs). I've not had a single problem with Call of Duty 2.
Still getting a PS3 when they release a good exclusive, so we'll see how they fair. Hopefully online capability won't be pointless this time around. Devil May Cry 4 and 1-8 look promising.
Interestingly, I've NEVER had any problem with a Nintendo product. I've had every system except that Virtual Boy POS.
