I'm using a 100MB Cable connection, but have no router, and recently bought a network adaptor for my ps2

Any recommendations on what I should invest in in regards to a router and a HD for my ps2?

I'm looking to spend around $100.00 on both components...might go a little bit over...maybe.

    Hard drives -
    http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/

    Specifically, the 250GB Western Digital 8MB 7200RPM IDE kit is $70 shipped at Outpost.com (item # 3620115) -
(search for Western Digital on their site...direct links to it don't work for some reason)

Although, I'd go with any hard drive that has a 3 year or longer warranty versus going for a Maxtor or a WD with a 1yr. Cheap is good...but a longer warranty is better since it seems that most IDE drives these days crap out on the 366th day you own them, recently.

As far as routers go...get the best priced Linksys/D-Link/Netgear that you can find. 802.11b/g is all you need (that is, if you even want wireless...gaming on wireless can be spotty), plus 4 ports of 10/100 ethernet...I wouldn't go beyond that.

    (edit - outpost.com link didn't work)

Don't bother with a router, they only cause problems & PS2 online was never designed for use with routers. Sony expected everyone to be connecting directly when they designed the service, hence all the problems people have with connection, port & DMZ errors.

When you've made up your mind on which router you want, look at this site:

    http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

It's a website with router specific instructions on how to set up your port forwarding. You can also google "port forwarding" and your router's model to find instructions specific for it.

Maybe you can play the PS2 & browse the internet at the same time, but it's physically impossible for the rest of us humans with only one pair of arms & eyes each!!

Your missing another piece of network hardware that could be:

    a 4 port switch.

This ISNT a router, it just directs network traffic. So no port forwarding, no DMZ etc. You would set it up:
    | ---- [Computer]
Cable modem <---->[4 port switch] <--|
    |----- [Ps2]

Switchs are alot cheaper also. They will not give you protection from online theats and a hardware firewall but as people have said the ps2 online system wasnt made to work with those systems/setups. So in this case its a good thing.
I thought i would add my thoughts as i couldnt see why you only think you can use a router.

    Regards
    Mole
