Ah damn it I just typed out a really nasty responce but then noticed that you were willing to be proven wrong. You took the wind out of my sails. Ok here is how this works. Each ps2 has a unquie ID within the i/o processor. Now Sony got ahold of all the disc ID's posted. When a server sees one of those ID's it polls the bios of the PS2. If it sees a patched bios (ie system booted a backup with Swap Magic, cdloader, or any Chip) it then bans this unique ID within the console itself from ALL SONY SERVERS! So in this way the rental still works fine but the guy who tried to pull a fast one it screwed forever even if he buys a legit game.
