PS2 Network Adaptor Problem
PS2 Network Adaptor Problem –
Well i thought it was a good idea to tell my experience with the PS2 network adaptor to see if anyone can help me, so let's see i received my NA and was imediatly surprised to see in the documentation a statement about the NA complying to the EMC directive with a cable shorter than 3 meters (i thought this was strange i deal with a lot of network equipment and never seen a statement like this), well i thought this was strange but just for fun i measured the cable supplyed with the NA and indeet it's lenght is a little below the 3 meter's, well no problem i just hooked it up together with an HDD to the PS2 and a 5 meter's cable and connected it to my switch, inserted the install disc, everything went ok, i registered my nick name in Central Station with no problems whatsoever. Problems began when i tried to run some homebrew application's envolving the NA like execftp, pslink, or faplink, the behavior of the apps was erractic they would run ok then all of a sudden they stopped working well i pinged the PS2 and i started noticing that it would ping rather well for some time and then no connection for 2 or 3 tries then everything ok for another time then no connection, first thing i tought was the cable was bad, so as i have two more equipments that have network at the side of my PS2 and they all work ok for quite some time i just exchanged the cable from one of those equip's to my PS2 but the problem remained, tried bether cables, crossover cables, shielded cables, different switch, even put some filter's in the cable and nothing problem remained, until i remembered that thing about the 3 meter's so i connected the cable supplyed with the NA and it worked then i tried with other cables with lenght's of 3 meters and was also ok, so bottom line is with cables bigger than 3 meter's the connection just gets all screwd up, i just don't understand why i mean i have made network connections with more than 50 meters between NIC and switch with no problems.
Also the link speed doens't seem's to afect the problem, i tried from 10 Half to 100 full and the problem is exactly the same.
I tried with a NA borrewed from a friend of mine and i got the same problem.
As a desperate measure i moved the PS2/PC/Switch/Router to another room just to discard the possibilitie of some kind of electric interference or something but still the same problem. As i sated i have 2 other equipment's at the side of the PS2 and they all work well at 100 full duplex, with the same kind and lenght of cable, also the cables take the same route as the PS2 one.
Also the central station software is a lot faster with the 3 meter's cable, it seems that the software is a lot more tolerant to the connection error's than the homebrew applications.
So is there some kind of solution to this problem or is it that the NA just sucks big time?
