as a lot of people think. Yes, the checks are partly sever-side and can be patched, but unlike Xbox Live, there are many different game companies running these servers. Even though Sony forced them, I'm sure Sony had a hard enough time getting them to burn the dnas protection on their discs, nevermind convincing them to patch these servers everytime a new crack is released. The software used on these servers are all the same and developed by sony, but it's up to the game companies to maintain their own servers that use the software.

A more fool-proof protection method would have cd keys which basically force people to run hacked servers which I doubt will happen on the PS2. Also, Sony would have to change the DNAS system completely in order to ban machines the way Microsoft does...as it stands now there is not enough of a deterrent to trying to play a backup online.

I'm glad you put as much thought into your explanation as I did.

What happens is that DNAS run server side, and patching the server it's just simply impossible. Some DNAS are just a joke such as the ones for SOCOM: US NAVY SEALs (PAL). Some group has claimed they hacked them, and that they are working on final bugs, but I say its "bullshit". I was trying out with the DNAS on EverQuest Online Adventures: Frontiers BETA just to find out that every time you log on into the servers using the DNAS, it loads a different executable making it impossible for you to cheat.

Also if you patched to game to get over the media check, the DNAS don't stop there. The DNAS also check the media on other points during gameplay. Which is impossible to stop that from happening because the server will just keep checking no matter what.

I hope this information clear some stuff out.

I just have a small thought, why haven't online servers enforced DNAS on the older titles?
    Like the 2003 games?

Does that mean that the DNAS lock is within the game database...?
If so, could there be a generic patch to make the CD think its legit?
