Does anyone knows about that the coils of the laser unit sometimes short and stop working ? with or without modchip.
I received 2 V10 and one V9 in less than 2 weeks for repair.
Of course the owners blame the chip ( one messiah, one magic V ) but the V10 don't have mode chip.

yes, I have read on another forum in ths site about the coils resistance being to low and blowing LA chips. I myself have 2 v9 and 1 v10 with pefrectly working lasers, but dead la chips. When you turn the ps2 on, the laser makes one tick and nothing else. these all had modchips (icev9). I took the chips out and used them in the next few jobs and the chips worked perfect so no damage to sx or flip flop.
Yea it now is just a mission to find where I can get replacement LA chips. I believe they are a type of opamp.

It's not an opamp, it's more like a servo driver

ummm, naaah. dont think applying a varing current across a low ohm coil (focus coil) sounds much like a servo driver to me...
The stepper motor that drives laser positioning wormdrive, has its own circuitry driving it.

This coils control the focus and tracking position, if this it's not a servo, I don't know what it is. Beside this, the circuit used in the past PS2 versions the BA9815 it's a sevo controller wich control the tracking, focus and laser position.
But the point here it's not the nature of this IC, but the problem with this laser units. I think that Sony made some miscalculations
