    Problem : Magic3 beta software on a PS2 3003R version 5 PAL

The chip is connected using the 33K resistor across the
resonator and a 33K on the reset line with a 1uF CAP
    across +5 and GND.

    Problems:
    1) With the chip installed the laser clicks three times even on originals.
If I remove the chip it stops.
    2) PS2 copies will not boot.
    3) PS1 mode works only if I wait for the three clicks and the disk to change
speed two or three times. Holding it down for a couple of seconds on power
    up fails.

I have tried the different values for reset from 10K to 33K and even the
15pF CAP, I not to sure about this as wouldn't it kill any DC signal?

I have also changed the 33K resistor across the resonator.

    - Removed - doesn't start up.
    - 5pF cap across - doesn't start up (checked with a scope).

Reconnect all points and the seem to be OK?

    Anybody have any ideas?

Also with the chips fuses shouldn't the fuse 7F2
be 7b2 if IFBD is enabled?

the 15pf cap stops any dc component upsetting the console, it does block the dc, but the chip looks for a change in state i.e. a switch rather than a voltage etc. 90% of the consoles I have done have been using a 15pf cap.

Putting a cap across the resonator will stop it resonating, as the cap effectively short circuits the oscillations. Not a single one of my installs has had a resistor across the resonator, although the sx datasheet does specify 10k ohms for that type of res.

All i can suggest is to recheck all your points and perhaps shorten the wires to the bios chip (mnop etc.)

The clicking problem sounds like you may have a partial short or some flux on the controller chip.

recheck all the cdvd points and expecially between them

Matloaf, when you say flux on the controller chip, which chip do mean and how will this cause a problem?

flux is the stuff contained within solder to help it flow. It leaves a residue that can cause some weird stuff to happen in some circuits, especially highspeed ones.

I'm not saying that is the problem, just something to check.

thanks for the advice matloaf, the reason I was checking is i use extra flux. Do you not recomend this?
