MAXDRIVE isnt reconised on ps2??? NOOB alert

Im a noob and feel overwhelmed by all the techy talk as I thought u just put a disc in and play it...lol

Annnyhow....
I have searched for the answer but cant find it so im asking you chaps
I bought a MAXDRIVE usb flash drive for my ps2:-

I have lost all game data on my memory card due to a memory card expander packing up and couldnt face to loose my saves again.
I have the following console version (NOT slimline):-
Console SCPH-30003
Browser 1.20
CD player 1.20
Playstation Driver 1.10
DVD player 1.30

Ive heard rumors of needing a disc to run before you use it but i think its for a different version to mine due to the packaging description on the front...this is the slightly different one to mine:-

I have tried plugging it in before and after the console is switched on..still no luck
This usb flash drive i have is supposed to save/transfer game data/saves/pictures the lot either to your ps2/pc or from your ps2/pc.
Some of these sticks come with a disc but mine didnt as it said its ps2 ready...
I know the usb ports on the ps2 work as I use the headset for socom and soforth great fun
and i know the usb flashdrive works because its reconised on the pc when i plug it in...
so why doesnt the ps2 reconise the usb flash drive?
I have no instructions because its probably meant to be a "plug n play" I think?
So am I not doing something I should?

You're missing the ARMAX evo disc. With that, you can transfer save from ps2 to computer or vice versa. Or if you have memory card exploit you can use Launchelf to do the same thing. In other words, you cannot move saves from mem card to USB without some kind of software.

Is there anywhere I can download this software or do I need to get intouch with the supplier of the usb stick?
If I can download the data can I burn it onto a CDR or will I still need a proper ps2 disc with it on?

yes u can download it and burned into a CD-R (if u have a modchip or swap magic), u can use Codebreaker 8 or 9 also...codebreaker recognises usb drive and the maxdrive also...u just need to make the files/gamesaves to ".cb" so the codebreaker will recognise the file.

find someone that have ar max evo disc or codebreaker 8+ and tell them to send all the disc files and make and .iso then burn it into a Cd

Excuse my stupidity but what is a "swapmagic" ?
I take it you mean if I have a chipped ps2?...."Modchip"
Unfortunately I have a bog standard PS2...so does that mean I cant download it and burn it?
Also...if it will work then where will I find the download please

swap magic are discs that works like a "modchip"...These swapmagic discs will allow you to boot backup/burned copies of your CD and DVD games for PS2 and other burned cd's.
and if u dont have swapmagic or a modded/chipped ps2...then u have to buy the original codebreaker 8+or the Ar Max Evo disc.
