i think at release it is going to be high again but drop in the first month
Here in Aus at EB Games the placeholder price is $899, doesn't really mean much.

oh yea well its going to go down we know it
If the price will be at start --999.99$ --- Which is possible at start of any console---then it is pointless to buy it. For 999.99$ is possible to make super powerfull PC.
And also purchase of PC is more practical--because on PC is possible to do work, browse internet, make videoediting, use PC as mediacenter---and much, much more. Also PC is not so hot in temperature--because it has efficient cooling system.
And what is possible to do on console? Only play games--and if to pay 999.99$ only for ability to play games---to my opinion is pointless.
Also lets talk about inability of Console makers to create really Cool Console. Lets remember about YLOD. So it is just pointless to buy it until they make really cheap, cool in temperature PS4.
For example I now have ps3 and PC. So all games which are created for ps3---their versions for PC perfectly fine running on my PC---more to say PC-versions of games look much more better--because on PC is possible to turn on additional effects, Antialiasing is in every game...
If to compare the same game for ps3 and pc --for example Mirrors Edge--then it is possible to see that PS3 version has a lot of Jaggies(NO ANTIALIASING) also runs in 720p--and it is just boring... But PC version of Mirrors Edge runs in Real 1080p --which is awesome--and also so antialiased that I starting to think that we are all cheated on that bought ps3 version of game for 60$.
But the main question is----which FrameBuffer will have during its work PS4 ????? Will it be Real 1920x1080p??? Will PS4 have finally antialiasing out of the box????
As far as we know--PS3 has lower Framebuffers in games than 1920x1080p (UPSCALING) and also ps3 does not have antialiasing.
So if PS4 also wont have Real Rendering Frame Buffer 1920x1080p and wont have Antialiasing---then to my opinion is better to buy PC...
It is just really sucks that PC-users already have Real Frame Buffers and Antialiasing for such long period of time, and Console makers ---will give it to us after Decades of waiting....

you cant be more wrong,
if history showed us something we would at least know that sony will ****ing kill as with the price at first and after releasing the PS5 the PS4 will drop a bit, exactly whats gonna happen to PS3,
so i believe the PS4 price will be at least 1g or more, no need to talk about the accessory you need with it, and i heard that they are going to make you pay for PSN from now on, on the PS4 sharing network crap, which i think its stupid for them to develop a whole button on the controller for it, they made it look like its a big thing,,, wowwwww
but i promise you it will suck big time, and keep in mind that i will buy the dumn thing any way
because thats what there is!
I need to create my own console, i will call it something like, sony is slow
PS2 launch price in Australia "Launch RRP AU $749.95"
PS3 launch price in Australia "The system will come in two bundles -- a PS3 with a 20GB hard drive (confirmed RRP of AU$829) and one with a 60GB HDD (confirmed RRP of AU$999)."
PS4 launch price in Australia " $???.??"
well you figure it out... that EB price of $899 isnt too far off i think.
@SkyNet . stop saying PS4 sucks get a PC. if you dont like the PS4 or dont want one fine.... just stay on topic of PS4 speculation.....

Actually I did not say that it sucks, but anyway....
If you want me to stay on topic--okey.
My prediction is that price for ps4 will be---399$ or 499$.
It can not be 599$ --because people wont buy it for 599$---too expensive.
And if to talk about 299$---does not sound to me to be real ----because 299$ is way to cheap for such powerfull system as ps4.
But the main question is:
Will sony for holiday 2013 manufacture enough ps4 units--in order to keep price tag stable---and mainly 399$ or 499$ ????

Well... today, you can buy a PS3 with 500GB, a game and the basics with $300.
And you can buy a PS Vita complete with a game with the $300.
Prices seen here: Sony USA - Consumer Electronics Products, Movies, Music, Games and Services
So, I'm guessing that the PS4 will probably be between $400 and $600.
They can't ask for too much, otherwise the sales will be almost zero.
