Im pretty sure that compatibility will be removed, however everything purchased from psn will be playable on it. Lets be honest, if you kept a hold of a 20 year old video game disc in playable condition you probably already have a mint ps1,2, or 3 to play it on as well.

I was also informed by a Gamestop employee that GameStop will be trying to cash in on the retro market around the same time as the PS4 release, They are purchasing old stock of everything from Nintendo to ps2 and are going to be selling systems and games online and shipped from the storage in texas.

im really not a fan of them going with amd... but it somewhat makes sence as they make gpu and cpu's and it prob will lead to the ability to crank out the hardware when the system starts to get old, but the whole x86/x64 thing has me skeptical, modding wise I think it will be interesting.....

can't wait to get my hands on one.

sony has filed a patent on a system that can trace a game disk and lock it into a particular users account. the idea is to stop loosing money to secondhand game sales.
I saw an article recently that showed that Eb, GAME etc make a significant percentage of there income from second hand games. all money SONY cant get any part of.

how is the PS4 going to be backward compatible with a PS3? PS3 is a CELL processor and the new PS4 is said to be an AMD fusion laptop style chip with intergrated graphics and possibly a 7000 series graphics chip too.
backward compatibility will have to be software emulator. IF they bother.. PS2 compatibility didnt last long on the PS3 did it?

I do not like the way sony make the system totally closed to the hacking community. So i am not sure i will buy ps4, or at least not sure how early i will.

Sony really go after the hackers, and for that i am not sure i am totally that interested in ps4. Consoles need some warez and hackability today, and when sony is too overbearing it really shuts of a community that could add to that console.

But one thing i would say is can they do a console with smb sharing network support. I hate dlna sharing, and would like to see on ps4 if they can a media player thing where smb sharing is supported. Not sure if sony will let smb sharing for media, but that put me right of ps3 and the media player thing on it. I am sick of having so many boxes, when a company like sony could of added this support and let us just use one box.

For all those with home servers, i would like to see smb sharing, but they will probably stick to dlna sharing which is rubbish.

Thats my view, and i am sure others too would like to see sharing added, as it surely cannot be that hard to add in support. If sony where to add a real media player interface with smb sharing for home servers and computers, than i may buy early. In this day of computing all types of network sharing should be on a console like ps4, surely it will be good enough to play all videos easily, why not add a smb sharing media player interface?

I have many PSX and PS2 games in excellent condition but I have lost my PSX and PS2 consoles in the process of moving 3 times within 2 years. Also it is very hard to buy PSX and PS2 memory cards these days.

Yea, like 16 USB ports and 4 ethernet connections, etc. I mean come on! Really? Who needs all of that crap on a game console anyway. Not to mention the fact that all those "bad ass features" cost money. Wasn't the PS3 like double the price of an Xbox 360 on launch?

My point exactly it cost twice as much, cuase it had twice as many "USEFUL" features gamers wanted, and everyone thought it was to high, until they found out they had to pay $100 for wifi and another $120 just for a decent HDD for the xbox 360. On top of having to pay monthly sub to access any of the xboxs offering commonly free with the playstion system.

lets not forget another $100 for hddvd's that soon discontinued, repairing rrod, and no Bluetooth.... yeah I think the 360 price point was pretty fair at the time.

I still have all my consoles in tip top condition. IMO I think Sony should focus on the formula (Ps3) I mean why rush? There is still alot of life in the Ps3 left so why jump ship and focus on a Ps4 when the Ps3 it's self isn't established like how the ps2 was. Most games from the ps3 originated from the ps2 except for AC/Uncharted and those are their best selling games. The 60gb Launch ps3 is still the best system of the generation right about now.

Idk I love how the ps3 is and I am not shelling out anymore money on another gaming system when there is nothing wrong with the current system. If anything I hope Sony drop the prices on the Ps3 there is a ton of games I didn't play yet. I can watch and play bluray on my Ps3 and stream netflix and I have my jailbroken ps3 to play games on.

When I buy a ps4 will be when there is alot of games to play on it...

It's funny how the PS3 has Bluetooth yet none of the Rock Band or Guitar Hero controllers used it. They used a stupid easily looseable USB dongle.

The main reason the PS3 cost so much was the Blu-Ray drive. New tech always costs the most at launch. Most Blu-Ray players around the PS3 launch cost like $300 or more. People keep complaining about the Xbox LIVE Gold membership costing money but I still find the Xbox LIVE multiplayer far superior to the PS3's. You get what you pay for. Yes there is a lot a crap that Xbox LIVE offers that I don't use. I don't use Twitter, Facebook, ESPN, Youtube, IE, and many other services that require Xbox LIVE Gold. The only thing I use it for is the Gold discounts from the Marketplace.

Bluray wasn't the only reason it cost so much, it was because they developed there own architecture instead of out sourcing (xbox out sourced to ibm) on top of bluray, and backwards compatibility. Appearantly they've learned those lesson, outsorcing and removing bc from the ps4

Also Sony is a Japanese product, and in Japan online gaming for consoles isn't nearly as popular as it is in America. Naturally xbox is gonna have a head start in this department coming from an american computer company.

Xbox live multiplayer isn't great because Microsoft made it great, its great because of the players, and their choice of game styles. (your comparing FPS players who pay for there time online, to rpg players using a free service)
