I remember a few years ago when MS was talking about 360 being forwards compatible with their next console version. They went saying how 360 games will look better on the next console they make so I doubt they would kill something that people wanted to see.
Sony keeps removing features from their consoles while MS adds more features to the 360. The PS3 of today does far less than what the launch model PS3 did. Where as the 360 of today does more than what what launch 360 did when it was released.
2 less USB ports
Xbox 360 additions:
More USB ports
Built-in Kinect Port
Built-In Wireless N
Every 360 can play compatible Xbox 1 games
Most people still believe that Sony removed OtherOS because it posed a security issue to allow piracy which is a load of malarky since it was revealed much later that they removed it because it was costing them too much money to maintain it.
I will personally only get a PS4 and Xbox 720 if they don't prevent used games from being played. If they prevent used games, they will go out of business as no one wants to be locked out of playing used games.
EDIT: I would have posted sooner but I've been away.
i agree, even though in the long run it really doesn't matter much(the games are what define a console, after all) i think its because sony needed to cut costs on the ps3 ASAP,because from 2006-2008 the ps3 wasnt really profitable,it started to become profitable in 2009 with the slim, nowadays it does beat the 360 in terms of sales, but only barely, and even then, nowadays owning a ps3 or a 360 is practically the same thing(save for exclusives) since 75% of the games are multiplatform.
@ccfman2004 1st off thanks for being the the very 1st non-badge to post the thread, as I agree with most of what you've written, I just want to say that the removal of otherOS seemed to be awfully close to the time that egohot found his 1st exploit in the PS3 (which I believe is what PSJailbreak was based off of) egohot even went as far as to build a 3.21 CFW (the 1st) in which he did not release due to his EGO!!
im rather surprised that egohot released a 3.55 cfw i mean why he wo- oh wait.
On the other hand Sony released a bad ass sytem with all the bad ass features you could want out of it, and everyone just complained the price was to high, so they cut the fat and made it affordable, people just bought Xbox's cuase they all already owned ps2's. sony shot itself in the foot.
now there scared and don't want the same to happen with the PS4. Microsoft will capitalize on this by providing backwards compatibility this time around since every ones old 360 had died from red rings anyway, but to be honest I think this will be the new Xbox's only saving grace. I don't think it will provide the next gen features and capabilities the ps4 will be able to, not because it sux, just because Microsoft is so concerned with trying to cash in on every stupid little feature someone else comes up with that they've been overlooking the ones that people actually buy the systems for.
I'm not excited at all for the PS4 because, quite frankly, it doesn't offer me anything I don't already have, or can't already get, elsewhere. In particular, some of their plans on locking down accounts and consoles and games make me cringe as the sole intention would seem to be killing off any and all resistance and taking yet more control over how the end user utilizes the system and software. A lot of that is theory and consiracy theory when it comes to the ps4, I admit that, but we've all seen their track record with the PS3 and I don't feel confident they'll do anything different this time. On the contrary I think they'll go even further. Which is bad for us(the end users). Less value for our money I guess it all comes down to.
To be honest, I forsee the beginning of the end of the home consoles coming with the next gen. Just like the video stores and arcades before them I think the home system's days will be numbered. And that's probably for the best. Things will swing back PC way and some new, different devices will pop out that offer more freedom while still offering everything the consoles offered before them. I'll be waiting for that. Yeah.
The part about PS4 won't be backward compatible for older games (i.e. PS3, PS2, and PSX) is a bit controversial. I've seen today a few articles published by some sites where PS4 will support them, but what they don't make clear is that if it will support your original "old-school" discs or will you have to buy again the PSN downloadable versions (Classics). Anyone?
Because if it's the case that PSN will make them classics, well a PS3 Slim can play them also. :)
BC of the future has already started w/ classic d/ls and re-vamps
Sure the PS3 was expensive at launch but look what it could do, almost full PSX and PS2 support, Blu-Ray player, and more. Using a Blu-Ray drive was an expensive move as current Blu-Ray players at that time were around $300. People just didn't get why the PS3 was expensive because they didn't release what was included in the console. The one thing that still urkes me is why they still haven't added Wireless N to the newer PS3s. Try downloading most PS3 games on Wireless G and then get back to me.
While MS added more hardware to the 360S, Sony kept removing hardware from the PS3. Try playing Rock Band with 4 or 5 local players without needing a 4-port USB adapter on a Slim. The only thing that is good with the PS3 is that you can use any 2.5" Hard Drive. Microsoft has yet to release a drive larger than 320GB. I have so many 16GB USB Flash Drives because I ran out of room it's not funny.
Sometimes it's not good to be a first adopter for any new hardware because it is probably full of bugs to begin with. With my 360, I was lucky, my Xenon 360 lasted about 4 years before it crapped out and it crapped out just as MS announced a price drop on the 360 Elite.
I really do think Sony should make a Special Edition PS3 with full PSX and PS2 support. People will pay extra to buy it. I know I would. I have a launch 60GB PS3 that is probably on its last legs.
The nail in the coffin will be if Sony prevents people from playing used games on the PS4.
