For some reason I haven't been able to figure out, the GSM+OPL integrated build often freezes on my fatty PS2 at the splash screen roughly 50% of the time for me. The exact point of the freeze happens between HDD detection and displaying the game list. Typically when OPL is booted, the HDD LED lights up solid for a few seconds, goes dark for few moments, and then blinks once quickly at the instant prior to displaying the game list. It's that second blink of the HDD LED that never happens 50% of time in the GSM+OPL build, meaning the game list never appears. Deadlock on the splash screen. One time is froze up while the splash screen faded out and the game list faded in.
Truly baffling - made me think my HDD was dying on me, but it passes SMART tests, no errors whatsoever with WINHIIP, no detection issues with uLE, etc. Re-tightened the NA to no avail. I even considered possible CFG file corruption or theme bugs. Deleted all of the config files in +OPL/CFG, reconfigured all my games, went back to the default OPL theme, and then removed all themes from +OPL/THM, and GSM+OPL was still locking up roughly half the time it started. Absolutely frustrating considering I don't how it's happening or what's causing it. To make matters worse, I discovered that I can actually recreate the freeze 100% of time by pure accident -- that "accident" consisting of having the USB stick in the bottom USB port instead of the top! Even that is a rarity for two reasons: (1) when I squat down in front of my PS2, it's at eye level - I'd have to be drunk or stricken with sudden glaucoma or cataracts to miss that top USB port, (2) if I'm not squatting, I use the tip of my left middle finger to feel for the bottom USB port, and essentially plug it up while using my index finger and thumb to ease the USB stick into the top port.
So uh ... heh ... yeah, calling myself a "typically un-coordinated graymeat saltine mahfah" only goes so far! ;)
A few days ago, I had enough -- reverted back to OPL r644 and renamed the GSM integrated build to OPL+GSM.ELF ... and no freezes at all. Which frosts my backside further since its inexplicable ... and leaves me with a 50% crapshoot when I want to play some of my PAL based games ... :(
Tell me I'm not alone ... :-pray:
