PlayStation 1 & 2 Xploder HDTV Player for PS2. Can this really make the games better and clearer?
No not really, I've tried this and it outputs a synthetic 720p/1080p not as you would see on the PS3 at all. Plus I've found that the compatibility on it is crappy.
I use GS Mode Selector (by doctorxyz and dlanor - search the forums for this) as it does a similar but much better job.

Actually it can make games look better, mainly by forcing interlaced games to progressive modes.
However like Xeauron wrote the higher resolutions 720p, 1080i (PS2 isn't capable of 1080p) are not really worth it, since they only stretch/upscale the original image by using simple pixel duplication which results in a more pixelated look. I recommend using the 480p mode instead and letting your TV set do the scaling job, since it won't do simple pixel duplication but some interpolation method instead.
But you should definitely check out GSM, it's free and still under developement. You can get it here, the ZIP files which contain the 'GSM.ELF' are attached to the first post. The newest version is GSM v0.36 which has a new, beginner friendly interface, so make sure you're using that and not one of the older versions...
how do i install it onto memory card? Do i have to install freemcboot ?
I would recommend using FMCB, yes.
There are also other ways to launch homebrew software (modchips with dev1 mode, swapmagic) but FMCB is definitely the best.
You need to install FMCB to your memory card first, later other homebrew like ulaunchELF (filebrowser / ELF launcher for PS2) and GSM can be launched from an USB flash drive

Most of you know it already, but you didn't mentioned it so the OP don't know it yet,...
GSM still uses half of the internal resolution in progressive-modes.
The screen-adaption is of course better, but when GSM could finally show both frame-buffers in progressive modes, we'd have a lot sharper picture on ALL progressive-modes... Can't wait to see that, since 720p still looked somewhat better than 576i/PAL (but you could see the halvened vertical resolution).
Can't wait,... When GSM finally handles this correctly, it is unbeatable in screen-adaption.![]()
Btw.: I just have the feeling, that the VSync-Handler doctorxyz is working on, might also fix the issue when you force PAL-Games to NTSC (for example out-of-sync audio&video, for example in FFX-FMVs).
Really? I thought it was a global problem for those games which set up the buffers in a specific way, or those game-engines, which sync to the vsync-rate.That's not true as a global statement. I guess you simply forgot to add 'in some games'![]()
Mostly/Probably the second thingy and the reason, why doctorxyz is working on the VSync-Handling-Stuff...
Anyway,... GSM will rule-out Xploder in any way, in futur releases.![]()
And if it doesn't fix that problem maybe we sometime get a GSM release with 576p mode implemented (so that all PS2 models can use it): All NTSC games in 480p, all (true) PAL games in 576p
Yes, that's why I wanted to add 'some games'. Your first post sounded like all games loose half of the vertical resolution when enforcing 480p, which of course isn't true (you know that but the OP probably doesn't).![]()
I don't know if this is the right place to ask but I am playing my scph 50001 ps2 on a 50 inch samsung plasma with component cables and it actually doesn't look too bad. The only thing is I don't want to keep playing it with the black bars on the sides because of it being a plasma and none of the screen zoom settings will get rid of the black bars unless I use the s-video cable which is not as good. Is there a way to manually stretch the picture a little more width wise to fit the screen or should I just hook my ps2 up to a crt or lcd tv? Also, the plasma tv is only a couple years old and has screen burn in precautions like pixel shift and scrolling and a couple other things to get rid of burn ins and it does a good job of not retaining static images. Any suggestions are appreciated.
