Hey guys,
If this is the main menu in the GS Mode Selector,
what should I press to get a game running at 480p?
I have a component cable and an HDTV,
the game I want to run originally doesn't have progressive scan or widescreen capabilities.

Hey guys,

After reaching that menu a very simple procedure will allow you to exit GSM into uLE with 480p being enforced for all subsequent programs (games or homebrew) until the next reset or the next launch of GSM.
1 press: Square
2 press: Dpad_Down
3 press: Start + Dpad_Down
The first pressing of 'Square' selects the first mode in the HDTV mode list, which is 480p.
(Pressing it repeatedly would select other HDTV modes in that list.)
The next pressing of the 'Down' button activates the currently selected mode (so here you activate the 480p you just selected above)
The final pressing of 'Start' is part of the exit command, and combined with 'Dpad_Down' pressed together with it, the exit destination is set to be "mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF" which on a normal FMCB setup will be uLaunchELF.
This lands you back in uLE (works fine in all video modes) ready to start whatever you like in 480p.
If you are using an original disc or an ESR backup I suggest using the "MISC/PS2Disc" command of uLE. (I always set that FileBrowser command on a menu shortcut of uLE, for single button access)
And if you are using a backup image through OPL, then it is of course OPL you should start here (it works fine in enforced 480p too).
That in itself is never any problem. We can still enforce the mode we want.the game I want to run originally doesn't have progressive scan or widescreen capabilities.
But sometimes there is a problem, as many games rely on the video interlacing as part of the game engine mechanics, and those games will not work properly with any non-interlaced video mode, which naturally includes all the progressive ones.
If your game is one of those having that problem, there is still one HDTV mode it probably works fine with, and that is 1080i, since that is an interlaced mode, thus allowing game engines that rely on that characteristic to work normally.
But hopefully your game does work well with progressive modes too.

I just downloaded the last 2 versions of this the other day and I can't seam to get it to work with either HDLoader or ElfLauncher setup in the BOOT Folder. I just get BSOD, but when I use it to exit to the PS2 Browser it works fine... Any ideas?
Not really. Not without more facts.
"can't seam to get it to work" does not provide sufficient details to serve as basis for any deductions as to why that happened.
And while I do know what HDLoader is and am aware of the method GSM can use to launch it at exit, I have no idea how your HDLoader is installed and normally launched, so again I have no details to base deductions on.
As for "ElfLauncher", I am not aware of the existence of any application using that name.
But if you happen to mean "uLaunchELF", please be aware that the proper abbreviation of that name is "uLE", and that your weird concoction is actually one letter longer than the real name.
Anyway, while I haven't use gsm036 much at all (that one is mostly by doctorxyz), I have used GSM v0.23x quite a lot, since I wrote much of it, and my normal method of exiting from GSM after selecting a video mode is always to exit to uLE using the exit option called "Exit to DEV1".
That choice simply means that the program will exit by launching the elf file stored as "/BOOT/BOOT.ELF" on the memory card, which is exactly how modchips do the DEV1 boot when set to do so. (Hence the name of that GSM option.) And this elf path is also identical to that used for uLE by all normal FMCB setups. For me this way of exiting from GSM always works fine, though the menu of uLE may of course vary in appearance depending on what video mode I selected for enforcement before exiting from GSM.
Using GSM v0.23x I have tested uLE in all kinds of enforced video modes, so I know that it can handle them all, though some are not really suitable for the uLE menu display, since uLE always attempts to use a display area corresponding to normal PAL or NTSC screens, which obviously can't be completely visible if the physical video mode enforced has very low resolution. But even then the program should not crash, though it may be hard to see what to do.
But one thing which can cause crashing is if you attempt to enforce a video mode for which your PS2 bios has no support. For example only fairly recent PS2 models support the video mode 576p, and on older consoles an attempt to set that mode will crash. The same also applies to some other modes for even older consoles, as additional HDTV modes have been added gradually to successive PS2 bios versions.
We have no chance of testing this on all existing bios versions, so each user needs to do a little crash testing of his own, to find out what basic video modes his bios tolerates.
By 'basic' modes I here mean the "Mode" entry in the "CURRENT PRESETS" section of the screen which changes when you use the main mode controls using the Triangle, Circle, Cross and Square buttons. That "Mode" value is used in a call to a bios function when you activate the video mode using the DPad_Down button, and if that bios version doesn't have an implementation for that mode argument, then the bios crashes...
But that then happens at the video mode activation inside GSM, not at exit to uLE like you say it happens to you, so this should not be the cause of your crashes anyway.
With so little details as you've given I have no way of guessing why it crashes for you, so please try to describe what you've done with some more details next time. Those details should include not only what you did inside GSM, but also some information about your setup and what method you use to boot homebrews.

>_< Found out the problem, some of my files were corrupted...
Does the 480P mode even work for PS1 games, cuz all I get is a uncentered/streched weird display of whatever game in normal 480i.

I guess you mean not modded.
I suggest you to update to uLE4.42a.PS2 with official 40GB HDD and network adaptor, uLE v4.41
'Elf' is not a valid extention, but 'ELF'.is on my memory card along with HDLoader v0.8C. Both are in BOOT as BOOT.Elf and HDLoader.Elf, but when I try to exit to either in 480P all I get is BSOD.
Rename the files to exactly match the filenames used in GSM (uppercase-letters).
Name them properly! If I choose Exit to PS2 Browser the 480P works fine for the BIOS menus and any disc based game but then if I try to still boot either Elf files useing PS1 disc exploit, I still get BSOD.
There is no progressive PS1-Mode, afaik...Also I tryed out the 480P PS1 mode too and all I get is a uncentered weird display of whatever game in normal 480i. Does the 480P mode even work for PS1 games?
The special mode switches for PS1 games are not intended to give a progressive mode, but should result in enforcing NTSC or PAL (so 480i or 576i).
But due to how the built-in PS1 emulator of the PS2 starts up and initializes the video mode, our only way of enforcing anything is to use abnormal variations of 480p and 576p to 'disturb' the video mode initialization of the PS1 emulator, which should result in enforcing either 480i or 576i. But until the switch to PS1 mode is completed the screen can look VERY weird for these GSM modes. We hope to find better ways of handling PS1 modes later.
These GSM modes are currently intended to give normal screen size with decent centering after the emulator has completed the switch to PS1 mode, but the effect also depends on the GS chip version as well as the bios version (remember that many versions will crash when setting 576p, so enforcing PS1 PAL mode for those models this way won't work).
In any case, you should regard these PS1 modes as experimental, and simply avoid using them if they have incorrect effect on your PS2 model.

Hmm, When I run "GSM . ELF" (GSMS_v0 . 23u beta From USB Stick) the app itself runs in 1080i on the ps2 (RGB component cables)
But when I select any 1080i and follow your instructions (exiting to DEV1) its like i'm viewing a zoomed in portion of the screen (instead of full screen)
My TV runs 1080P and all modes below that.
I'm trying to play FFXII IZJS in 1080i (so far I've tried "stretching" my picture via options on my remote, but I want to try and use GSMode selector and play in 1080i.
What mode do I need to select? When I launch a game it still plays in 480i (and scales improperly that I can't view 3/4 of the screen)
its like GSM zooms in to a random 1/4 of the picture (either in the center screen or top-mid or something) Whats the difference between "GSM . ELF" and "uncompressed GSM . ELF"?
So I just tried this: Preset 1080i Full Frame + Bufferfield (Pressed Down to activate) exited to DEV1, launched ESR . ELF from my MCBoot MC1 (slot2) and i'm gonna launch the game.
So far the ESR Menu goes from Left to Right of the screen (minor pixelation- could I choose a better setting?) and i'm gonna launch my game.
TV Screen size is set to Dot-by-Dot for true size of whatevers playing (no stretch)
I launch the game and it runs in 1080i (First time its worked!!) and I get this big black bar around the video, how do I make the game full screen?
EDIT: I had to put spaces in between the ELF files names because the forum thought I was trying to post links...
nothing?
