I think No.47's description is accurate. Let me try to attach a screenshot - take a look at the detail on the characters. There's just no way this could be scaled up from a 512x448 source picture. On the other hand it also does expose how non-hires the surroundings are, doesn't it?
I really like the screenshots I've seen of PS2 games running on backwards-compatible PS3s with smoothing activated. Seems like a perfect compromise...
