more Battle Gear 3 (NTSC-J) testing. it almost works in hd 1080 modes but every time you pass a checkpoint in a race, the screen goes black for a few seconds (i imagine it's while your segment time is being displayed... or whatever shows on the screen when you pass a checkpoint).
also just making sure you heard... thunderforce 6 (NTSC-J) works perfectly in 480p. looks beautiful
Gran Turismo 3 NTSC-U crashes randomly in the game using either hd 1080 mode
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas NTSC-U (SLUS 20946... the original release). 480p black screen

Thank you very much for the tip! I'm gonna try that as soon as i'll go back home.
Also, sorry to bother again about that but is there a way to reduce the black borders with the 1080i HDTV settings?
Thank you very much.

Question
Do you have any sort of "short list" as to which PS2s are known to work with 576p?
Answer
Sorry, but 576p is not implemented in the bios of any fat PS2, to our knowledge.
I can't fully test this until my component cable comes, (using composite right now), but it does attempt to set it and ends up using 576i in an extremely cut off top half screen on my TV (trying to force 480p does the same thing, but in 480i mode). I'm not sure if that means anything, but if it would normally crash upon GSM executing the function call, my 50001/N phat is not crashing. I'll test this more when my component cables come next week.

480p neo contra you can actually get to the main menu by hitting start rapidly after the konami screen just like gradius V. but still the game will crash before you get to actually play (just after you select a stage)
pity too. the game looks great. character select screen you can see a small sample of firepower while you select. looks like the game would be nice

Result: Nevermind, I'm an idiot
Confirmed 50001/N does NOT work at 576p. (Unless it is switching to RGB for some reason, my TV refuses RGB over Component for some reason, but does support all PAL modes)

That is correct. Of all the HDTV modes, I think 576p was the last one for which support was added to the PS2 bios.
(Unless you want to count 1080p and 720i, which never have been added to the bios.)
Both 1080i and 720p were implemented earlier than the 576p mode, which only exists in some of the latest slim models. (Definitely in SCPH-770xx or newer.)
I'm not 100% sure, but I suspect that an SCPH-500xx console only supports 480i (NTSC), 576i (PAL), 480p and 1080i, but neither 576p nor 720p.
It should be theoretically possible to implement some video modes even when bios lacks support for them, provided that the GS chip itself has the capability for it, by direct control of all the GS registers involved in setting up a video mode. But the existing versions of GSM do not have that degree of control over the GS registers, as we still do not have complete documentation on how all GS registers are to be used. And if we ever do take full control of them, we will need to know even more about the differencies between different GS chip versions. So making such an implementation would be extremely demanding...

Yep those modes are missing from ps2 linux too irc, I don't think sony would leave such options out if the GS at time supported them.

I see. 1080i and 720p did work for me, but made an extremely squished picture. 720p fills most of my screen after maxing out the vertical size on my TV's settings. 1080i doesn't get quite as much screen space. I never knew the PS2 even supported HD, was it ever officially used or did it go the way of the iLink?
