Complete NOOB question concerning System FW 4.0 and the True Blue dongle
Complete NOOB question concerning System FW 4.0 and the True Blue dongle –

Hi all,
as you can see this is my first post on the forum.
I'm completely new to the PS3 scene and that's because my son just made the step from WII to a new PS3.
We had his WII modified at a local repearshop here in town but what we found out after buying his PS3 that this is a completely new sort of trick.
I've started to search the www and after a while stumbled at PSX-SCENE (great forum btw)
Started out reading, a lot pfew, but still got some questions.....
After pluggin in the ps3 last week my son updated the firmware to v 4.0 - and after reading the true blue section it all states that the firmware MUST be downgraded to 3.55
= Okee, i'll guess we'll manage that by use of the tutorial on this forum =
My questions are....
- will we lose many features of the v4.0 update
- can the official game disc of gran turismo 5 he owns still be played
- is there any other thing we have to keep in mind before buying a dongle and starting of downgrading etc.
Well as I stated in the topic title, y'all must think i'm a noob, and y'all know what, you're axactly right
Thanx for anyone outhere who will come to the rescue
KR,
Roy

Hello
and welcome.
I don't really know what features you might loose, when downgrading, as most of the newer firmware versions don't really offer anything new - as far as i'm concerned. fw. 4.00 has some options for the new ps vita handheld, but when you don't own one there's really no point in staying.
of course you need the newest firmware for using the psn and playing online. but it should be clear that there's no online gaming with a jailbroken console.
you can always play your original games, unless they don't require a higher firmware than you have installed. As you'll have to downgrade to fw version 3.55 to jailbreak, gt5 will run fine.
once downgraded you can choose between a custom firmware like kmeaw, which is free, and a dongle like the tb dongle. dongle plays almost all the games, cfw plays games until 3.55 and some of the newer games - if there's a special fix.
be careful, as remember reading something about ppl loosing blu-ray playback, when downgrading, but this may be obsolete.
greetings

well actually, if his ps3 is new-new and it came with v4.00 from the factory, he wont be able to downgrade the firmware....

Good call. He's right. And if it is an older downgradable console you will most likely need to use an e3 flasher or progskeet and a skilled professional to perform the downgrade. I believe you have to sodder but not sure on the process. And then you can pick a cfw or dongle to go with.
As far as I know, my ps3 has never had an undetected error.

Thanks guys for the explainations,
It seems because our PS3 is "new-new" and came with FW 4.00 we have to stick to an un-jailbreaked version for now.
I guess we just have to wait for the scene to come up with a future solution since to my opinion we are not the only ones with new PS3's after last xmas ;-)
Till then, it's being stuck to the legit ways of playing.

Yea. At this point in time your best and pretty much only solution for cfw ps3 is buying a used one and check the firmware before you buy it. Try to find one 3.55 or lower. You'd be surprised, their are probably still a few good fatboy dust collectors sitting around out their that someone never updated. You wanna find the people that bought it just for a bluray. It is less likely they would update their FW unless they stream netflix which of course Sony makes you cling to their latest update just to use
As far as I know, my ps3 has never had an undetected error.
