I'm still trying to learn about the PS3 CFW but I'll be receiving my E3 flasher and TB dongle hopefully tomorrow and I'm still a bit confused.

Does the Kmeaw or Rebug firmwares offer anything that the TrueBlue CFW doesn't offer? (yes, I know that the TB firmware is required for the TB eboot patches)

For example, I see a "TrueBlue Rebug" firmware.

My main concern is preventing PS3 updates that might brick the system and having the best compatibility with PSN games... (ie. do I need ReactPSN? does that work under the TB CFW?)

Until I got my TB dongle and switched the their firmware, I was (and still am) a longtime Kmeaw fan. It just works great. Of course it does not support 3.60+ games, that is still TB territory. I do know that Rebug TB edition CFW does not work with TB dongles that come preloaded with 2.51 updates. Other than that I have not used any of Rebug's CFW's. According to BahumatLord, TB's CFW's are not very reliable when copying some games from disc (ex: Arkham City). From what I have read, besides TB's CFW, I would suggest Kmeaw as a second CFW if you are not experienced with the various CFW's that are out there.

    Thanks for the reply!

Aside from unreliable disc -> HDD copying, is there anything extra that Kmeaw provides?

Do both firmwares (Kmeaw and TB) support PSN games? What about preventing accidentily PS3 updates?

Kmeaw has been around a long time so it doesn't bring anything new to the table. It can support psn games (older ones anyway). Basically anything Kmeaw can do, TB can do. As long as you keep your PS3 disconnected from the net, you have no problem with accidental updates.

If you wanna best compatibility with the homebrews, youre gonna love the Rebug.
If you have a TB + Rebug you don't need any other cfw.
Rebug gives you (over Kmeaw) Debug options 1-2, Package Manager and future compatibility updates via Rebug Updater.
Rebug is a Kmeaw+, so you don't need Kmeaw anymore.
Other than if you have a e3 flasher (like me) you can always try the JFW-DH 3.56 (DemonHades.Org • Portal)
It is nice experience, excellent CFW and the plus sides (you can never count them) is interesting.
Also it provides you to homebrew and legal gaming.
If you have a original disc, you can play new games via hdd demonisos (disc inside, never tryd).

Spoofer to prevent accidental updating (also works for some 3.56+ Blu-ray Movies), reActPSN for some PSN yes (some are pre-cracked),

Kmeaw is more stable and is free for 3.56 games you have to mod the eboot however for them to work PSN games work. To prevent updates on Kmeaw dont connect your ps3 to net and turn off automatic updates in XMB (you can't get on PSN anyway) You can use updates up to 3.55 on all games and some 3.60 games have 3.55 updates which will make the game work on Kmeaw as long as the update is installed e.g; LA Noire and Brink. You must manually get updates on PC/MAC from websites such as ps3brewology and damox.net not via the ps3

TrueBlue costs around 60 bucks, need special PARADOX eboots you download, they are released sporadically and release whatever they feel like. Does play currently 123 3.60+ games including 22 japanese games. Compatibility is very good and BDMIRROR, DIRECTBOOT options are no longer needed like in KMeaw to get some games to work. TB rebug is not officially supported and has worse compatibility after TB CFW v2 was released Rebug fails to work with trueblue, you need TB CFW v2 to play the newest games.

TrueBlue eboots come with a PARAM.SFO that is edited to make the game not update. Unlike KMeaw however official sony updates wont work, you have to use a PARADOX update and so far only SKyrim has one. You can play most PSN games on TB although some require more effort.

    Ahhh, OK.

So any updates that require > 3.55 I should _never_ apply, right? ...and for True Blue patched games, I can't apply any updates at all unless released by paradox?

For example, L.A. Noire has an update but requires 3.60 but I guess I can't ever apply that. Also, Final Fantasy XIII-2 has a patch but requires 3.70 so I'd have to wait for paradox to release one (since it's a True Blue patched game anyways).

    >3.55 never apply on Kmeaw or TB CFW, unless like LA Noire, brink and a few other games that have a an update that only requires 3.55 (the 3.55 update takes place of the 3.60 original eboot, LA Noire's is the 1.01 update) 3.56 eboots you can use a program called ebootMOD made by DeanK (multiman creater) to make them 3.55, I dont know if this works on 3.56 updates as well, as I dont know if any 3.56 updates even exist.

As far as everything else you mention (FF XIII-2, etc) you are correct.

PS if you accidentally apply a GAME update that's higher than 3.55 you're not forever doomed you just uninstall in XMB via Game data utility and it will use the original eboot again. The only way you're doomed in turns of updates is if the Firmware updates higher than 3.55, so its always a good idea to delete the PS3_UPDATE folder in the game's root folder. But even then you can use a downgrade utility which involves buying a flasher, soldering skills, is a pain and not necessarily stable.

I have Cobra and TB and I switch between them and regular rebug all the time without need for a flasher or even a USB device. Best of all once you do this it disables any online updates from the system so a spoofer isn't needed. I use Cobra for PS1/2 games, TBv2 (never had a single problem) for most stuff, and when I need to activate PSN I use regular rebug as it works way better then Rebug TB or TB CFWv2.
