Thinking about getting a PS3
Thinking about getting a PS3 –
Hi I was wondering if it's still possible to buy a PS3 and be able to play back ups of my games.
I was thinking the new PS3's might have the versions that are not downgradable installed and I'm just a bit confused.

Read the forum rules please. Discussion of piracy is forbidden.
But if you are looking to play back ups of games that you own, then you would be better off trying to find a PS3 with firmware 3.55 or below. You can put custom firmware on older 3.55 systems. Brand new PS3s are no good for this.

Reason: may as well answer the question
sorry, fixed that part.
I just want a new one because I hate buying used electronics...
I have done a little more research, seems like the only way is to actually open up the PS3 if you get anything past the 3.55 firmware.
Do you have any tips on finding a solid 3.55 system? Maybe one with some kind of warranty? I really just hate to buy a used one.. then have it break in a few weeks/months.
or is there any possibility of breaking the PS3 so that it has to recover and install a super old firmware? I remember doing this to my PSP.. not sure if it would apply with PS3.
also, I called a few gamestop's they said they can't check the firmware because it's boxed up, but they offer warranty and even a free 1year replacement service.
they have 120gb slim, but also some older fat ones 40 and 80gb, but the prices are very close. I was wondering if the fat versions of the PS3 all come with 3.55 or lower and if that would be an option?

Ebay. Search for PS3s but don't put "3.55" in your search query. A seller that has "3.55" in the title knows that it's rare will charge more for it. Find some PS3s and send each seller a message asking what firmware the PS3 is on. Include instructions on how to find that information in the menu. I was able to find a 3.55 launch PS3 doing this last summer.
40/80gb PS3 Fats all shipped with firmware less than 3.55, but they have an equal chance to have been updated as any other unit.
As far as a warranty, I understand wanting one. When it comes to getting a jailbreakable PS3, I think you're going to have to abandon hope on getting one with a warranty. If you really want to get one from a retail outlet with a warranty, keep an eye out for PS3s with game bundles. If the bundled game came out before February 2011, then there's a chance that it has the firmware you're looking for.
