Downgrade a CECH-2501A?

So my CFW 80 gb phat just got the YLOD and I decided to take the $129 trade in deal from Sony to get a refurbished CECH-2501A 160GB slim.

I'm a little confused as I'm reading the compatibility lists if I can hardware downgrade it. How will I know when I get it what firmware it was released with? Considering it's a refurb it could have been originally built 2 years ago.
